COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio Dominican women's basketball team hosted the 11th-ranked Ashland Eagles at Alumni Hall for a crucial conference game.
After a tough fight throughout all four quarters, the Panthers were defeated by the Eagles, 49-39. Brynn Mullet led the Panthers with 12 points, five rebounds, and two assists, playing 38 minutes. Gabby Stare followed with 10 points, four rebounds, and two steals, while Logan Pride added six points in the paint.
First Half Notes
The first quarter was a rough start for the Panthers as the Eagles quickly surged with a 9-0 run, fueled by three consecutive three-pointers. However, halfway through the quarter, the Panthers began to chip away, scoring steadily to close the gap. Ashland finished the quarter shooting 29.4% from the field and an impressive 45.5% from beyond the arc.
Ohio Dominican found their rhythm early, out-shooting Ashland with a 53.8% field goal percentage and a perfect 1-for-1 from three-point range. At the end of the first quarter, the score was tied at 15-15.
In the second quarter, both teams struggled offensively. Ohio Dominican's shooting dropped to just 20% from the field, missing all three of their three-point attempts. Ashland's defense stepped up, limiting ODU to just four points during the quarter.
Ashland's offense saw a slight improvement, raising their field goal percentage to 30.8%, but their three-point shooting declined to 20%. Heading into halftime, Ashland led Ohio Dominican 25-19.
Second Half Notes
To begin the third quarter, Ashland outshot Ohio Dominican, making 41.7% of their field goals by hitting 5 of 12 attempts. Meanwhile, ODU shot 31.3% from the field and 33.3% from three-point range. Ohio Dominican leaned on their defense, limiting the Eagles to just 10 points while scoring 12 themselves. As the teams entered the final quarter, Ashland held a 35-31 lead.
To close out the game, Ashland kicked off the final quarter with two key three-pointers, extending their lead. They shot 38.5% from the field, making 5 of 13 attempts, while ODU struggled at just 18.2%. Ashland outscored ODU 14 to 8 in the quarter.
Overall, Ohio Dominican capitalized on Ashland's turnovers, scoring 19 points off them, and also earned 18 tough points in the paint. The Panthers shot 32% from the field, 25% from beyond the arc, and were perfect from the free-throw line overall. The game remained competitive throughout, with the Panthers battling hard. In the end, Ashland secured a 49-39 victory.
