Softball Secures Sunday Sweep Over Oilers

FINDLAY, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican softball team wrapped up their weekend at the University of Findlay on Sunday afternoon. The Black and Gold swept the Oilers, 3-1, and 2-0.

Once again, Alli Madden (Cincinnati, Ohio) had a multi-hit day as she went 2-5 from the plate. Erica Massey (Independence, Ohio) also had two hits and had an RBI. Both players had a stolen base.

Lilly Irvine (Delaware, Ohio) and Alexis Stevens (Marion, Ohio) both secured RBIs today. The two also scored. Senior, Lindsey Potter (Plain City, Ohio) went a perfect 2-2 on stolen bases today.

In the circle, Marlee Jacobs (Plain City, Ohio) pitched 7.0 innings, giving up zero earned runs. The sophomore tallied seven strikeouts, bringing her to 202 career strikeouts. In game two, Addison Smodilla (Terre Haute, Ind.) went 5.1 scoreless innings, allow only two hits while retiring three batters. Grace Hammer (Uniontown, Ohio) came in to pitch 1.2 innings, picking up her fourth save of the season. Hammer gave up two hits while striking out one.

Game One
The Black and Gold got on the board first in the top of the second inning. Emily Walker (Plain City, Ohio) got on base with a walk. Following her was Potter with an infield single. A double steal moved them into scoring position for an Irvine sacrifice fly, giving the Panthers a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the frame, the Oilers got to work, plating one off two hits and an ODU error. Kaleigh Golden (Thornville, Ohio) tabbed a hit in the top of the third but was stranded. Two innings later, Irvine opened the inning with a walk and later scored to push the Black and Gold ahead, 2-1.

An inning later, two Findlay errors and a Madden single allowed Stevens to score, making it 3-1. Jacobs and the defense locked it down in the last two innings as Jacobs retired all three batters in the sixth and the infield turned a double play in the seventh.

Game Two
Findlay netted the first two hits of the game in the bottom of the second and third innings but couldn't score either run. In the top of the fourth inning, the Panthers took a 1-0 lead with the help of a Golden walk, a Madden sacrifice bunt, and a Stevens RBI single.

In the next two innings, Irvine singled down the right field line and Madden beat out a bunt. In their last at bat, Liana Morreale (Gibsonia, Pa.) had a pinch-hit single through the left side and later scored off Massey's second hit of the day, making it 2-0. Findlay had no response as ODU snagged game two, securing the sweep.

Up Next
The Panthers will take a break from conference play as they host regional opponent Lewis on Wednesday afternoon.
