COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican softball team began their weekend with a home series against Tiffin University. The Panthers took the opening game, 1-0, but battled the Dragons through 11 innings in the nightcap, falling 6-5.
Four players had multiple hits on the day including
Alli Madden (Cincinnati, Ohio) and
Saadie Maysonet (Worthington, Ohio). Madden scored twice and had a stolen base. Maysonet walked twice and had an RBI triple.
Following them was
Lindsey Potter (Plain City, Ohio) and
Alexis Stevens (Marion, Ohio). Potter scored twice, hit a double, and had an RBI. Stevens stole a base, batted in a runner, and scored once.
In the circle,
Marlee Jacobs (Plain City, Ohio) pitched 7.0 scoreless innings. The sophomore allowed only three hits and retired six batters. In game two,
Addison Smodilla (Terre Haute, Ind.) went 6.0 innings, allowing no earned runs. Smodilla tabbed five strikeouts.
Grace Hammer (Uniontown, Ohio) made an appearance in game two. Hammer went 5.0 innings, collecting 10 strikeouts.
Game One
Tiffin notched their first hit in the top of the second. ODU added two hits in the bottom of the third with singles from Maysonet and Madden but couldn't convert them to runs.
In the bottom of the fourth a leadoff double from Potter set the plate for an RBI single from Stevens, putting the Panthers on top, 1-0. TU added a hit in the top of the seventh but couldn't score, giving the Black and Gold the win.
Game Two
Game two was a pitcher's duel until the fourth inning when the Dragons secured two hits, yet they left the bases loaded. In the top of the sixth, back-to-back errors from ODU allowed baserunners for Tiffin. A double scored both, giving the Dragons a 2-0 lead.
Ohio Dominican responded in the bottom of the frame with a single from Madden, who later came around to score off a Potter single to right center, making it 1-0. In the bottom of the next inning,
Emily Walker (Plain City, Ohio) homered to center field to tie it up at 2-all, forcing extra innings.
The Dragons notched hits in the eighth and ninth innings. In the eleventh inning, Tiffin plated four with the help of two singles and a three-run home run, making it 6-2.
The Black and Gold rallied in the bottom of the frame with a leadoff single from Stevens. With two outs,
Erica Massey (Independence, Ohio) singled up the middle, scoring two to make it 6-4. Maysonet grabbed her second hit of the day with a triple to right field, scoring Massey to push it to 6-5. The rally ended there, resulting in a split of the series.
