CANTON, Ohio - The Ohio Dominican Panthers (22-16, 13-9 G-MAC) baseball team finished off a four game sweep of the Malone Pioneers (6-35, 3-23 G-MAC) on Sunday (April 21) afternoon.
With wins of 9-8 and 8-2, Ohio Dominican completed their third sweep of the year.
Game 1 (W, 9-8)
Ohio Dominican got three runs in the opening inning on the help of six straight batters reaching base.
Lane Marshall (Wooster, Ohio) was hit by a pitch with
Jack Mathey (Copley, Ohio) following with a single. A fielder's choice from
CJ Dean (Columbus, Ohio) swapped out Dean on the basepaths for Mathey.
Spencer Tammaro (New Albany, Ohio) walked to load the bases.
Jordan Daniels (Blacklick, Ohio) singled home Marshall and Dean before
Jake Scherette (Brunswick, Ohio) followed with a RBI knock to score Tammaro.
Malone cut the lead to 3-2 in the second inning with two runs scored. In the third inning, ODU filled the bases with two walks and a single. Scherette reached base on a catcher's interference play to score the first run. A bases loaded walk by
Drew Emerson (Germantown, Ohio) from a new Pioneer arm made it 5-2 with
Peter Jelenic (Medina, Ohio) adding a sacrifice fly for a 6-2 lead.
From the third inning to the fifth, Malone took the lead with two runs in each frame. After tying the game in the fourth, they took an 8-6 lead in the fifth inning.
Three runs in the top of the seventh lifted the Panthers to the win. Daniels started the inning with a walk.
Jacob Adams (Troy, Ohio) singled as a pinch hitter. Malone went back to the bullpen for a new reliever. Following a sac bunt, a passed ball scored Daniels and Jelenic tied the game with a RBI knock to center field. Three batters later, Mathey lined a double to right center. Mathey put the Panthers up 9-8 and ODU won the first game of the day.
Mathey had three hits for the game while Jelenic added two hits. Daniels and Tammaro walked twice as the Panthers worked eight walks as a team.
Chase Hunt (Ashland, Ohio) struck out six batters with six runs (three earned) allowed in three and one third innings.
Andrew Deyhle (Cincinnati, Ohio) gave up two runs in one inning of relief.
Max Whitesell (Dayton, Ohio) tossed two and two thirds innings of scoreless relief.
Game 2 (W, 8-2)
The Panthers scored first before Malone had the chance to bat.
Brennen Hunt (Ashland, Ohio) walked, stole second and moved to third on a groundout. Mathey brought B. Hunt home with a groundout to third base.
Two Malone errors allowed ODU to add two runs in the third inning. B. Hunt reached on an error before Marshall doubled home Hunt. A hit batter and another error loaded the bases. A wild pitch made it 3-0 for the Panthers.
Malone got back in the game with two runs in the sixth inning, trailing 3-2 as the contest hit the seventh inning. Four straight singles, a wild pitch and an error created four runs. Dean and Tammaro both added RBI singles. A wild pitch scored Dean and Tammaro came home on a throwing error.
Later in the ninth inning, Emerson closed the scoring on a RBI single. ODU completed the sweep with an 8-2 win.
The top five batters in the lineup accounted for eight of the nine hits as a team, scored all eight runs and drove in five. Marshall, Dean and Tammaro all had two hits with B. Hunt, Marshall and Mathey scoring twice each.
Jared Hoersten (Oregon, Ohio) gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits in five and one third innings. He struck out five as he improved to 2-1 on the year.
Steven Chapman (Dayton, Ohio) ended the game with three and two thirds innings of scoreless relief. He scattered one hit and two walks with two strikeouts.
Ohio Dominican will wrap up their road schedule with a rescheduled doubleheader at Cedarville on Tuesday (April 23). First pitch from Yellow Jacket Field is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
