Baseball Wraps Up Cedarville Series With Split

CEDARVILLE, Ohio - After a postponement two weeks ago, the Ohio Dominican Panthers (23-17, 14-10 G-MAC) baseball resumed the series on the road against the Cedarville Yellow Jackets (11-31, 7-17 G-MAC) on Tuesday (April 23).

Ohio Dominican scored 19 runs on the day and came away with a split of the doubleheader, allowing Cedarville to take three of four in the overall series. The Panthers won game one 11-2 before Cedarville took the nightcap 10-8.

Game 1 (W, 11-2 in 7 innings)

The Panthers used a big second inning to get the ball rolling on three hits, two errors and four walks. Jordan Daniels (Blacklick, Ohio), Jake Scherette (Brunswick, Ohio) and Drew Emerson (Germantown, Ohio) loaded the bases with two walks and an error. A wild pitch brought the first run home before a passed ball on a walk from Peter Jelenic (Medina, Ohio) created the second run. After a pitching change, Brennen Hunt (Ashland, Ohio) singled home Emerson but the ball got past the center fielder, allowing Jelenic to score and Hunt ends up at third base. Lane Marshall (Wooster, Ohio) singled home Hunt before Spencer Tammaro (New Albany, Ohio) brought Marshall home later on during a fielder's choice. ODU led 6-0 after the inning ended.

Cedarville scored one run in the bottom of the second before the Panthers added three more runs in the fourth inning. An error, double by CJ Dean (Columbus, Ohio) and Tammaro hit by pitch loaded the bases. Daniels grounded out before Scherette and Emerson notched RBI knocks.

One inning later, Mathey doubled and then crossed the plate on a Tammaro RBI single as the ODU lead grew to 10-1.

The final inning saw both teams score to complete the scoring. Marshall was hit by a pitch and scored on a Daniels RBI single. Cedarville scored one run on a hit batter as the Panthers won the first contest 11-2.

Eight of the nine starters had hits in the game while all of them scored at least once. Mathey had three hits while Hunt and Emerson both added two hits. Dean and Jelenic walked twice

Trayce Mercer (Troy, Ohio) allowed two runs on four hits and four walks in his six and one third innings as the starter. He fanned four batters to earn his second win of the season. Chris Bartholomew (Centerville, Ohio) got the final two outs to finish the game.

Game 2 (L, 10-8)

Cedarville scored first in the first inning with two runs on the board. ODU responded in the second inning with a bases loaded sacrifice fly by Sam Battles (Norwalk, Ohio)

In the fifth inning, Ohio Dominican took the 4-2 lead on one swing of the bat. With two outs, Marshall doubled and Mathey walked to set the table for Dean. Dean drilled a three-run home run to left field.

The Yellow Jackets scored three runs in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh for an 8-4 lead. A walk, catcher's interference and a double steal allowed Daniels to double home two runs as ODU cut the lead to 8-6 in the eighth.

Cedarville rebounded with two eighth inning runs for a 10-6 lead. Mathey ended the game with a two-run home run to left field in the ninth but the Panthers left the tying run at the plate.

Batters two through five accounted for all hits in the lineup. Dean and Daniels each had two hits while Marshall, Mathey, Dean and Tammaro all scored twice. Seven different players coaxed a walk.

Chance Woods (Columbus, Ohio) gave up five runs (two earned) in 4.2 innings.

Ohio Dominican will host Northwood for four games this weekend in Panther Valley, starting on Saturday (April 27) at 1:00 PM.
