CANTON, Ohio - The Ohio Dominican Panthers (20-16, 11-9 G-MAC) baseball team opened the series on the road against the Malone Pioneers (6-33, 3-21 G-MAC) on Friday (April 19) afternoon.
Ohio Dominican swept both ends of the doubleheader, 6-1 and 5-4 with some key moments on both offense and on the mound at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium.
Game 1 (W, 6-1)
The opening five innings of the contest featured a number of zeroes on the scoreboard. Ohio Dominican broke through in the sixth inning.
CJ Dean (Columbus, Ohio) walked with one out in the inning. Dean stole second base and took third after a wild pitch.
Spencer Tammaro (New Albany, Ohio) snapped the 0-0 tie with a RBI single to right center. One inning later, some key insurance runs came home for the Panthers.
Drew Emerson (Germantown, Ohio) and
Peter Jelenic (Medina, Ohio) both singled with one out.
Lane Marshall (Wooster, Ohio) lined a two-run triple to the right center gap as Ohio Dominican pushed the lead to 3-0. Malone made a pitching change as the game hit the seventh inning stretch.
Malone scored in the bottom of the seventh, making it 3-1 on a RBI single. The Pioneers made a push in the eighth inning, forcing
Michael Lesiecki (Uhrichsville, Ohio) out of the game after back-to-back walks.
Andrew Deyhle (Cincinnati, Ohio) entered a no out jam with two on and left the 'Neers trailing 3-1. A three-run ninth inning for Ohio Dominican blew it open. Emerson walked as the leadoff batter. Malone could not get the runner on a fielder's choice with an error as two runners were on base. A sacrifice bunt moved everyone into scoring position before Marshall was intentionally walked to load the bases.
Jack Mathey (Copley, Ohio) doubled home two runs and the third run came home on a balk. Ohio Dominican took the first game of the series 6-1.
Seven different Panthers had hits in the game with Mathey and Emerson each having two hits. Emerson scored twice along with Jelenic. Dean swiped two bases as he reached two times.
Lesiecki tossed seven plus innings with one run allowed on five hits. He walked three batters with two strikeouts for his fourth win of the year. Deyhle earned his first career save with two scoreless frames of action.
Game 2 (W, 5-4)
Malone scored first with back-to-back doubles in the first inning. A big spot for the Panthers got them back on top in the second inning. Tammaro started the inning with a single before Emerson was hit by a Pioneers pitch.
Michael McFadden (Brunswick, Ohio) blasted his third home run of the season, a three-run shot to left field.
Malone tied the game again in the bottom of the second as the game was 3-3. A bases loaded fielder's choice in the top of the third from
Jacob Adams (Troy, Ohio) put ODU back on top 4-3. Emerson plated a run in the fifth inning with a bases loaded sacrifice fly, allowing the lead to grow to 5-3. The Pioneers got a run back in the bottom of the sixth but ODU swept the twin-bill with a 5-4 win.
Brennen Hunt (Ashland, Ohio), Mathey and Tammaro accounted for two hits each.
Brian Allen (Troy, Ohio) allowed four runs on seven hits in his five and two thirds innings. Allen improved to 4-1 with his outing of two walks and two strikeouts.
Derek Bolander (Oregon, Ohio) picked up the four out save with two strikeouts. Bolander now has 15 saves in his career and third of this season.
The series will continue on Sunday (April 21) with the final doubleheader from Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium. First pitch for the doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
