COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican softball team wrapped up the weekend by hosting the Hillsdale Chargers on Sunday afternoon. The Chargers stunned the Panthers, handing them two losses, marking the first time ODU has been swept by a conference opponent since the 2021 season.
Lindsey Potter (Plain City, Ohio) and
Alli Madden (Cincinnati, Ohio) had the best day at the plate going 2-5. Potter snagged a double while Madden has two singles.
Lilly Irvine (Delaware, Ohio) went 1-3 while
Kaleigh Golden (Thornville, Ohio) had a single, a walk, and a stolen base.
In the circle,
Grace Hammer (Uniontown, Ohio) went 2.2 innings, retiring four batters.
Addison Smodilla (Terre Haute, Ind.) had three strikeouts while
Marlee Jacobs (Plain City, Ohio) notched two.
Game One
Hillsdale got things started early in the opening inning by plating three runs off three hits. They added a run in the top of the third to make it 4-0. The Panthers tabbed their first hit in the bottom of the fourth with a single from
Alexis Stevens (Marion, Ohio).
More action came in the top of the fifth as a two-run shot to center field pushed the Chargers ahead 6-0. In the bottom of the sixth, Madden singled through the left side but was caught stealing to end the inning. ODU had no answer, dropping game one, 6-0.
Game Two
In the bottom of the first,
Emily Walker (Plain City, Ohio) laid a bunt down the third base line to give the Black and Gold a base runner. In the next frame, two hits allowed HC to jump out to a 1-0 lead.
Potter opened the bottom of the frame with a double to left field. A sacrifice bunt moved her to third, but she got stranded. Madden and Golden began the bottom of the third inning with singles, but two foul outs ended the rally.
Potter added another hit in the bottom of the fifth. In the top of the sixth, Hillsdale scored four with four hits, making it 5-0. Irvine singled up the middle in the bottom of the seventh, but Ohio Dominican couldn't string anymore hits together, falling in game two, 5-0.
