ASHLAND, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican softball team battled the Arrows of Ursuline on Thursday afternoon at Deb Miller Field in Ashland. The Panthers took two from the Arrows, winning 9-5 and 12-0 in five innings.
The Black and Gold outhit UC 23-9 with four players securing three hits on the day.
Makaila Moses (Lancaster, Ohio) went 3-4 in the second game with a double.
Alli Madden (Cincinnati, Ohio) went 3-5 with a run batted in and scored three times. The senior was 2-2 on stolen bases.
Alexis Stevens (Marion, Ohio) and
Kaleigh Golden (Thornville, Ohio) both went 3-6 from the plate. Both had a double while Golden added a triple as well. Stevens batted in three with a stolen base while Golden had two RBIs and four stolen bases.
In the circle,
Marlee Jacobs (Plain City, Ohio) went 7.0 innings, striking out nine in her complete game.
Addison Smodilla (Terre Haute, Ind.) pitched 4.0 scoreless innings in the second game, allowing only one hit.
Liana Morreale (Gibsonia, Pa.) came in relief, pitching 1.0 innings allowing no hits.
ODU set season high game records for runs scored in a game with 12, hits with 16, runs batted in with 11, doubles with six, and stolen bases with 10.
Game One
The Black and Gold got things started early in the top of the first inning. Two walks and three stolen bases set the stage for a Stevens sacrifice bunt, scoring one. Two more stolen bases, an error, and a single from
Emily Holland (Mineral Ridge, Ohio) put ODU on top 4-0. Madden singled in the second and stole two bases to score on an error, making it 5-0.
In the bottom of the third, four hits allowed UC to plate four runs, cutting their deficit to one. The Panthers answered with two hits, scoring three runs to go ahead 8-4. In the top of the fifth,
Erica Massey (Independence, Ohio) snagged her second hit of the year. Ursuline added a fifth run in the bottom of the inning.
In the next frame,
Emily Walker (Plain City, Ohio) tripled and later scored on a single up the middle from
Olivia Congleton (Belpre, Ohio) to make it 9-5. The Arrows had no response in their final two at bats, giving ODU a 9-5 win.
Game Two
Golden opened the second game with a triple to left field. A single from Stevens plated Golden, making it 1-0 early. In the next frame,
Saadie Maysonet (Worthington, Ohio) tabbed a double followed by a
Kendrick Sterling (Crothersville, Ind.) single. Both scored off a Golden double, pushing the Panthers ahead 3-0.
In the top of the third, six hits scored six runs for ODU, making it 9-0. Stevens and Moses both doubled in the inning.
Anna Darrah (Canton, Ohio) had a two-run pinch hit single as well. In the fourth,
Shelby Flynn (Heath, Ohio) had a lead-off double, her first hit of the day. Moses singled and Maysonet doubled to add two more.
In the fifth, Flynn and Moses paired together for two hits to score one, bringing it to 12-0. In their last at bat, UC had no answer, ending the game in a 12-0 run rule in the fifth.
