Panthers Take Two From Saints

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican softball team opened their week with a home series against G-MAC newcomer, Thomas More. The Panthers downed the Saints, 5-0, and 9-1, in six innings.

Alexis Stevens (Marion, Ohio) led the way with four hits, including a double and a triple. The senior drove in five runs and stole a base. Emily Walker (Plain City, Ohio) and Alli Madden (Cincinnati, Ohio) both went 2-4 from the play. Walker scored three times with three stolen bases and three walks. Madden had an RBI and two stolen bases.

In the circle, Grace Hammer (Uniontown, Ohio) and Addison Smodilla (Terre Haute, Ind.) both notched wins today. Hammer pitched five scoreless innings, giving up only two hits. Smodilla went six innings, allowing only one run. Both had five strikeouts.

Game One
ODU got things started early in the opening inning. Kaleigh Golden (Thornville, Ohio) singled along with Walker and Olivia Congleton (Belpre, Ohio), who scored them both. A single from Emily Holland (Mineral Ridge, Ohio) allowed Congleton to score, making it 3-0.

In the bottom of the third, Lindsey Potter (Plain City, Ohio) led off with an infield single. A Walker walk set the stage for a two-run single from Stevens, pushing the lead to 5-0. The Panthers added another hit in the bottom of the fourth. Thomas More had no answer, giving ODU the 5-0 win.

Game Two
Roles were reversed in the second game as two hits allowed the Saints to take a 1-0 lead. The Black and Gold got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Holland reached on an error and was brought around with a sacrifice bunt and a single from Madden, knotting it at 1-all.

In the bottom of the sixth, Liana Morreale (Gibsonia, Pa.) had a pinch-hit single off a bunt to get things started. Walker followed with another bunt single. A Stevens triple scored them both, making it 3-1. Three more singles, a fielder's choice, and an error brought it to 8-1 with one out. Stevens doubled to left center, plating one to end the game. ODU won 9-1 in six innings.
