COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican softball team got the weekend started on Friday afternoon with Cedarville University. The Yellow Jackets took game one, 5-1, but it was all the Panthers in game two, winning 5-2.
Alli Madden (Cincinnati, Ohio) had the strong bat today going 4-6 from the plate and scoring once. Following her was four Panthers with two hits each.
Liana Morreale (Gibsonia, Pa.) pinch hit in each game, going 2-2 with a double and two runs batted in.
Alexis Stevens (Marion, Ohio) had two hits, including a double, and plated two.
Emily Walker (Plain City, Ohio) had a double among her two hits and scored twice.
Olivia Congleton (Belpre, Ohio) went 2-5 from the plate with a home run.
In the circle,
Grace Hammer (Uniontown, Ohio) pitched eight scoreless innings in the two games. Hammer retired eight while collecting her third save of the season. In the second game,
Addison Smodilla (Terre Haute, Ind.) picked up another win. The graduate struck out two and allowed only two runs in 5.0 innings.
Game One
Cedarville started strong in the opening inning, taking a 4-0 lead off four hits, including a grand slam. In the bottom of the frame, Stevens tried to get things going but was stranded on the bases.
The Yellow Jackets added another run off a leadoff solo home run in the second inning. In the bottom of the fourth, ODU opened with a Walker double. Morreale scored her with a single through the left side, making it 5-1.
In the Black and Gold's final three at bats, Madden accounted for two of their three hits, along with a single form Congleton in the bottom of the fifth. CU won the opening game, 5-1.
Game Two
Once again, Cedarville took the early lead in the first inning off a two-run shot from Casey Bertke. In the bottom of the second, Walker singled and later scored on a
Saadie Maysonet (Worthington, Ohio) double to right center, making it 2-1.
In the next inning, Congleton knotted it at 2-all with a solo home run. In the bottom of the fifth, a
Kaleigh Golden (Thornville, Ohio) walk followed by a Madden single, set the plate for a two-run Stevens double. ODU took a 4-2 lead.
The fun continued in the bottom of the next inning as Maysonet walked. Morreale had a pinch hit double, plating Maysonet to grow the lead to 5-2. Cedarville had no response, resulting in a 5-2 win for Ohio Dominican.
