CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. - The Ohio Dominican Panthers (3-6, 0-4 G-MAC) men's basketball team closed out their conference schedule for the 2024 calendar year with a rare Monday (Dec. 16) night contest.
Ohio Dominican led in the first half but the Thomas More Saints (7-3, 3-1) rallied for a low-scoring 58-51 win at the Connor Convocation Center.
BOX SCORE NOTES
- Terrance Broughton finished with a team-high 14 points, knocking down four shots from beyond the arc.
- JeJuan Weatherspoon was one rebounds short of a double-double as he totaled 11 points and nine rebounds. A majority of Weatherspoon's points came at the free-throw line with a five-of-six line.
- Jaylan Green came off the bench with seven points and three assists.
- Derek Goodman scored five points with five rebounds, making one three pointer.
- Elijah Hinton and Zac Kimball combined for 14 rebounds and eight points. Kimball had six boards and five points while Hinton scored three points with eight rebounds.
- The Panthers shot 43.8% (14-32) in the first half before settling at 33.3% overall (18-of-54) in the game.
- ODU won the rebound battle with 38 rebounds and 13 offensive boards.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Weatherspoon scored the first four points of the game as the Panthers led 6-3 at the first media timeout.
- Broughton followed with five points, allowing the Panthers to push the lead to 13-7 with 13:12 left in the first half.
- A 9-2 Thomas More run gave the Saints a 16-15 lead with 7:33 left in the half.
- ODU closed the first half with their own run of 18-6, knocking down four three pointers along the way. The Panthers led 33-22 at the intermission.
- Broughton tallied 11 points in the opening half.
- Thomas More started the second half with a 9-0 run and expanded it to a 20-3 spurt over the first ten minutes of the second half, leading 42-36.
- Some key free throws allowed ODU to score six straight points, tying the game at 42 with 8:39 left.
- The teams exchanged points, mainly at the free throw line for about a minute and a half as Weatherspoon gave the Panthers a 45-44 lead at the line, splitting a pair of free throws.
- The Saints regained the lead on a three pointer (47-45) with 5:55 remaining and elevated the lead to as many as 12 points (58-46) with a 14-1 run with 36 ticks left.
- Ohio Dominican scored the final five points to leave the deficit at 58-51.
