Men's Basketball Splits Home Back-to-Back, Routs Penn State Beaver

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Heading into conference play next week, the Ohio Dominican Panthers (3-2) men's basketball team hosted a pair of non-conference opponents as part of a home back-to-back. Monday (Nov. 25) saw the Panthers host the newly minted Division II Roosevelt Lakers before facing the Penn State Beaver Nittany Lions on Tuesday (Nov. 26) at Alumni Hall. 

The Panthers fell 67-57 to Roosevelt in the first game but reemerged in a big way, winning 112-45 over Penn State Beaver in the second game of the week. 

Monday 11/25 vs. Roosevelt (L, 67-57)
  • Elijah Hinton added a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds, shooting a career-high nine-of-15 on the floor. 
  • Jejuan Weatherspoon followed with 13 points and eight boards as he converted five field goals and three free throws. 
  • Antonio Carter came off the bench as he scored ten points with five rebounds and two assists. 
  • Zac Kimball had five rebounds along with his four points. 
  • Carson Seemann tallied four points, four rebounds and four assists. 
  • Ohio Dominican shot 32.8% (22-67) from the floor while Roosevelt shot 43.3% (26-60). 
  • The rebounding category was tied 41-41. 
Ohio Dominican trailed 6-0 two minutes in off a pair of three pointers. Five different Panthers combined on an 11-0 run spanning four minutes, taking an 11-6 lead with 13:50 left in the first half. Roosevelt tied the game at 13 with seven of the next nine points and then pushed the game to a 29-19 lead with a 23-8 run at the five minute mark. The lead was cut down to four before the Lakers led 35-30 at halftime. The game remained a two possession game until Hinton made it 45-43 with 9:34 to go. Roosevelt created some distance with a 16-5 spurt to lead by 13 points (61-48) with under four minutes left. The final score was 67-57 in favor of Roosevelt. 

Tuesday 11/26 vs. Penn State Beaver (W, 112-45)
  • Jaylan Green came off the bench with a 26-point, four assist, three steals performance. Green was 11-of-18 shooting with a pair of threes and two free throws. 
  • Hinton had 17 points and seven rebounds, going eight-of-ten on the floor. 
  • Brady Moore and Tony Ezeonu each tallied 12 points, with both of them combining for nine rebounds, three assists and three steals. Ezeonu was a perfect five-of-five in field goals with one three pointer and one free throw while setting a career-high in rebounds. 
  • Weatherspoon had 11 points with four boards and three assists. 
  • Kimball and Seemann neared triple-doubles in the game. Kimball had ten points with five rebounds and four assists. Seemann scored eight points with a career-high nine rebounds and six assists (tied career-best). 
  • Terrance Broughton swiped five steals for a career-night with seven points. 
  • In the rout, the Panthers shot 57.9% (44-76) with ten threes (32.3%) of 31 attempts. They held the Nittany Lions to 45 points on 34.8% shooting (16-46), 28.6% from deep (4-14) and 64.3% (9-14) at the free throw line. 
  • ODU out-rebounded the opposition 47-21 with 30 assists and 17 steals. 
  • In terms of the Division II era (2010-present), the Panthers ranked in the top ten in a number of single game categories...

Both teams exchanged three point baskets in the opening 75 seconds before ODU went on a 17-2 push for a 20-5 lead nearing the final 13 minutes of the half. After the Panthers pushed the lead to 20, Ohio Dominican used a 12-0 run to open the largest lead of the first half (45-17). They led 50-23 at the intermission. Ohio Dominican outscored the Nittany Lions 62-22 in the second half, winning the game by 67, 112-45. 

After the Thanksgiving break, Ohio Dominican will begin conference play at Hillsdale on Thursday (Dec. 5).
