ODU Snags 3-0 Win Over WVWC To Wrap Up The Vulcan Invite

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Ohio Dominican volleyball team wrapped up the Vulcan Volleyball Invitational today with a 3-0 win against the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats.

  • At the net, junior Lauren Lucas (Grove City, Ohio) led the way with 10 kills. Lucas added five digs, two blocks, and two assists. Following her was Ashley Aselage (Tipp City, Ohio) with eight kills. The sophomore also snagged two blocks.
  • Senior libero, Kelsey Shoup (Dalton, Ohio) netted 12 digs and three assists. Both setters for the Black and Gold recorded double-figure assists. Saige Avery (Yorkville, Ill.) grabbed 15 with Gabrielle Kirker (Tallmadge, Ohio) snagging 10.
  • Sophomore Grace Zinchuk (Schaumburg, Ill.) led the team with four blocks at the net. Both Ashley Chmielewski (Roscommon, Mich.) and Bailey Christiansen (Delaware, Ohio) added three apiece.
  • Both Shoup and Lucas made the All-Tournament team this weekend for their performances.
 
How It Happened
  • The Panthers jumped out to an early 6-3 lead off of two attacking errors from the Bobcats. The Black and Gold them went on a 6-0 run, extending their lead to 12-4.
  • ODU remained ahead the rest of the set, closing it out with a kill from Zinchuk, winning it 25-18.
  • The second set went point-for-point before WVWC went on a three-point run to pull ahead 7-5. Ohio Dominican responded by winning five of the next six points, making it 10-8.
  • The Panthers went ahead as many as five points, taking the second set 25-19 with a kill from Lucas.
  • The Bobcats opened the third set strong, taking an early 4-1 lead. The Black and Gold retaliated with four consecutive kills, taking the lead 7-5.
  • ODU extended their lead to 13-7 after winning six of the next seven points. With the momentum, the Panthers ended the third set on top, 25-13, outscoring the Bobcats 9-2 towards the end.
