Thursday Night Thriller Results In Comeback Win For ODU

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Ohio Dominican volleyball team opened conference play on the road at Trevecca Nazarene University. The Panthers and the Trojans battled through five sets where the Black and Gold came from behind to win 3-2.

  • Leading the way for the Panthers was Lauren Lucas (Grove City, Ohio) with 23 kills. The junior added 13 digs, two blocks and a service ace. Joining her in double-figures was Jenna Peters (Vermilion, Ohio) with 14 kills.
  • Senior Kelsey Shoup (Dalton, Ohio) recorded 20 digs. The libero registered three service aces. Fellow senior Alexis Keipert (Burlington, Ky.) added eight digs on the back line.
  • Sophomores Saige Avery (Yorkville, Ill.) and Gabrielle Kirker (Tallmadge, Ohio) combined for 52 assists. Avery had 23 with Kirker grabbing 29. Avery recorded a double-double with 10 digs while Kirker matched Shoup with three service aces.
  • At the net Ashley Chmielewski (Roscommon, Mich.) and Grace Zinchuk (Schaumburg, Ill.) collected 10 combined blocks. Chmielewski had four with Zinchuk leading with six.
How It Happened
  • The Trojans jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in the opening set. The Panthers battled for the next five points to take the lead by one.
  • The two went point-for-point before the Black and Gold broke away to an 18-12 lead with kills from Lucas and Zinchuk.
  • Trevecca never gave up and rallied to win six of the last seven points to take the first set 26-24.
  • Once again, TNU ran out to a 5-2 lead to begin the second set. The Trojans offense remained strong throughout the second set recording 15 kills and collecting four blocks to take the set 25-18, taking a 2-0 lead on sets.
  • Trevecca and Ohio Dominican went back-and-forth before the Panthers took a four-point lead making it 10-6 off kills from Ava Horn (Whitehouse, Ohio) and Chmielewski.
  • The Purple and White battled and tie it up at 16-all. N=From there, no one led more than a point until the Black and Gold won the last two points off a block from Chmielewski and Zinchuk, taking the third set 25-22, making it 2-1 in sets.
  • Ohio Dominican found themselves behind early in the fourth set, 7-2. ODU trailed for most of the set until kills from Lucas and Peters gave them a 16-15 lead.
  • The Panthers remained in front for the rest of the set, grabbing nine of the last 12 points, including back-to-back service aces from Kirker to end the fourth set with a 25-19 win, tying it 2-2 in sets.
  • Like the other sets, Trevecca quickly took the lead, 4-1, in the final set. The Panthers went on a five-point run to make it 6-4.
  • A service ace from Zinchuk gave the Black and Gold a four-point lead, making it 10-6. The Trojans fought back and brought it within one but the front line for ODU remained strong, ending the set with a kill from Ashley Aselage (Tipp City, Ohio) and a block from Zinchuk and Lucas. The Panthers won the set 15-12 and won the match 3-2.
