ASHLAND, Ohio - The Ohio Dominican Panthers indoor track and field team kicked off their month of February with the Jud Logan Light Giver Open on Friday (Feb. 3) and Saturday (Feb. 4).
The Light Giver Open was held at the Niss Athletic Center at Ashland, the host school of the Great Midwest Championships in three weeks.
In a test run of the young facility, the Panthers saw one school record broken and another one matched while setting 12 personal records and a number of season bests for individuals and the team.
WOMEN
Brooke Armbrust (Grove City, Ohio) broke the school record of 25.90 in the 200 meter dash, with a personal record time of 25.75 seconds - 12th in the overall standings. She later tied her own long jump record with a last jump of 5.23 meters in a 14th place finish.
Molly Van Horn (Granville, Ohio) ran the tenth fastest time in the 60 meter prelims, finishing third in her heat with a 7.94 second run.
G'nae Morrison (San Antonio, Texas) timed out at 8.17 seconds in the 60 meter prelims, fourth best in her heat race.
Nikane Ambos (Wapakoneta, Ohio) and Kassydee Owens (Harlan, Kentucky) ran in the 60 meter dash qualifying heats, timing out at 8.43 and 8.53 (8.526) seconds, respectively. Owens ran a personal best in her qualifying heat.
Morrison set a season-best in the 200 meters at 26.93 with Ambos finishing behind at 28.51 seconds and Grace Pitt hitting a PR at 30.80 seconds.
For the 400 meters, Owens was at 1:05.60 while Pitt set another personal mark of 1:11.47.
The Strawn sisters competed in the mile run with a pair of season bests and one personal high mark. Jeralyn Strawn (Lancaster, Ohio) ran the fastest ODU mile of the season, 6:04.15 for a PR while Jaclyn Strawn (Lancaster, Ohio) finished at 6:17.47 - her best time of the 2022-23 season.
Kelsey Shaffer (Spencerville, Ohio) participated in the 800 meter run, finishing with a 2:57.42 time.
The ODU foursome of Ambos, Van Horn, Armbrust and Owens combined for a 4x400 relay time of 4:22.80 - the fastest for the Panthers this season in two tries.
Marie Pascaline Ndayshimye and Jadelyn McNerney (Springboro, Ohio) finished back-to-back with best shot put throws of 8.58 and 8.52 meters, respectively as McNerney reached a PR.
MEN
Eugene Boahen was 11th fastest in the 60 meter prelims, running a 7.04 second time. In the 200 meter run, Boahen finished third overall with the fourth fastest 200 meter time in school history - 21.99 seconds.
Aly Diaby worked his way through the qualifying heats to move into the prelims of the 60 meter dash. Diaby set a PR in qualifying with a 7.089 second run before running a 7.22 in the prelim heats. Also in 60 meter dash qualifying, Blake Wilson (7.291) set a personal best mark behind Diaby but in front of Manny Codjoe (Bolingbrook, Illinois) - 7.31 seconds, Ismael Obas (Columbus, Ohio) - 7.377 seconds and Benjamin Seely (Chesterton, Indiana) - 7.434 seconds.
Codjoe and Seely entered in the 200 meter run, adding times of 23.41 seconds and 24.05 seconds of their own.
ODU sent a quintet to the 400 meter dash, led by Diaby, who set the season and personal best with a 50.71 second time. Wilson followed with a 52.25 second run with Marcus Steele (Columbus, Ohio) (52.95 seconds), Jaivien Steele (Cleveland, Ohio) (55.07 seconds) and Seely (57.83 seconds) behind him.
Ethan Sinning (Tipp City, Ohio) ran the second fastest mile of the season for the Panthers and reached a new PR of 4:37.836 while Landon Latham (Westland, Michigan) reached his season-high at 5:09.09.
Obas made his third best long jump of the season, a 6.33 meter mark, in 17th place.
A pair of 3K personal records fell as Jacob Krous (Galena, Ohio) and Edward Devaney (Lexington, Ohio) crossed the finish line with times of 9:20.29 and 10:25.57 in the results column.
Owen Wilhelm (Sunbury, Ohio) was tied with a number of high jump athletes with a top jump of 1.80 meters.
Just like the women, the Panthers scratched off a new season-best in the 4x400 relay. Wilson, Boahen, Codjoe and Diaby shaved nearly two seconds off the season best with a 3:26.70 mark.
For the distance medley relay, Krous, M. Steele, Latham and Merrick Shorter teamed for a tenth place finish with 11:09.83 as the final time.
Tyler Hampton was tied at 12.03 meters for the shot put in his second appearance of the season while Henry Pierce made his SP debut with a final throw of 10.37 meters.

The Panthers will travel to Springfield, Ohio in two weeks for the Wittenberg Invitational on February 18th.
