ASHLAND, Ohio - The Ohio Dominican Panthers indoor track & field team participated in the 2023 Great Midwest Championships at the Niss Athletic Center, hosted by Ashland University on Friday (Feb. 24) and Saturday (Feb. 25).
The Panthers got 15 personal bests over the weekend with two school records falling. Brooke Armbrust (Grove City, Ohio) reached the podium for the Panthers in the 60 meter dash.
As a team, the men finished with five points - tying for tenth place. The women were ninth of 11 teams with ten points.
MEN
FRIDAY
Eugene Boahen found a spot in the 60 meter finals with the fifth fastest time on Friday. He ran a 6.95 second time in his heat. He went two-for-two with finals appearances as he qualified for the 200 meter finals with a season best of 21.97 seconds.
Owen Wilhelm (Sunbury, Ohio) earned an eighth place finish with a 1.90 meter jump in the high jump, gaining one point for the Panthers.
Manny Codjoe (Bolingbrook, Illinois) ended the 60 meter prelims with a 7.20 second time. Benjamin Seely (Chesterton, Indiana) ran a PR of 7.29 seconds in the 60 meter prelims.
Ethan Sinning (Tipp City, Ohio) ran a 5K personal best on Friday with a 15:41.56.
Ismael Obas (Columbus, Ohio) topped out at 6.53 meters in the long jump for a 16th place finish.
Aly Diaby tied his season best with a 22.80 200 meter time. Codjoe also clocked a season-best 23.01 seconds in the prelim heats.
SATURDAY
Boahen ended the 60 meter run in seventh place with a finals time of 7.02 seconds.
Diaby set his fastest time of the season and career in the 400 meter prelims, ending in 14th place with a 50.15 second time. Blake Wilson shaved nearly six tenths of his PR with a 50.98 second prelim mark, slotting 20th overall.
Jacob Krous (Galena, Ohio) reached a personal best in the mile run, setting the 2nd fastest ODU time of the season. Krous timed out at 4:28.61 - nearly five seconds better than his previous high.
Marcus Steele (Columbus, Ohio) and Landon Latham (Westland, Michigan) both ran season bests in the 800 meters, stopping the clock at 1:58.40 and 2:07.27, respectively.
Merrick Shorter (Dublin, Ohio) beat his previous 3K best time by nearly 25 seconds with 8:52.11. Edward Devaney (Lexington, Ohio) shaved seven seconds off of his best time in his career, 10:18.29.
Diaby, Wilson, Codjoe and Boahen finished with a 4x400 meter relay time of 3:28.96.
Tyler Hampton topped at 11.17 meters while Henry Pierce reached 10.18 meters in the shot put.
WOMEN
FRIDAY
Brooke Armbrust (Grove City, Ohio) ran a 7.60 second time in the 60 meter dash prelims, tying her own previous school record. She qualified for Saturday's final with the fourth fastest time. In the 200 meters prelims, Armbrust broke her own school record with the eighth fastest time - 25.43 seconds to qualify for the finals.
Molly Van Horn (Granville, Ohio) set a best mark of 25.91 seconds in the 200 meter prelim heats. She was 14th overall.
G'nae Morrison (San Antonio, Texas) ran a 8.16 second time in the 60 meter prelims. For the 200 meters, Morrison tallied a 27.54 time in her heat.
Two of the 400 meter trio for the Panthers set personal records. Van Horn was 11th in prelims with a 59.16 second time. Nikane Ambos (Wapakoneta, Ohio) and Kassydee Owens (Harlan, Kentucky) finished back-to-back in 18th and 19th place with PR marks of 1:03.07 and 1:03.32.
SATURDAY
Armbrust smashed her own 60 meter record with a 7.58 second time in the finals. She earned a third place finish on the podium with a NCAA Provisional mark.
Jeralyn Strawn (Lancaster, Ohio) and Jaclyn Strawn (Lancaster, Ohio) both ran personal highs in the 3000 meters. Jeralyn was at 11:51.30 with Jaclyn crossing the finish line at 11:57.94.
Van Horn, Owens, Ambos and Armbrust combined for a seventh place finish in the 4x400 meter relay. The quartet set a season-best with a 4:07.27 time.
Marie Pascaline Ndayshimye reached a career-best in the shot put with a best mark of 9.68 meters.
The Panthers will prepare for the 2023 Outdoor season, beginning in late March.
