SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - In advance of the 2023 Great Midwest Championships next week, the Ohio Dominican Panthers indoor track and field team prepped for the indoor finale at the Wittenberg Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 18) at the Steemer Center.
Overall, the Panthers saw one school record broken with 20 personal bests among nine top five finishes.
WOMEN
Brooke Armbrust (Grove City, Ohio) broke her own school record in the 60 meter prelims at 7.60 seconds, cruising as the fastest runner. After hitting a NCAA provisional mark in her first run, she followed it up with a 7.61 final time to win and tie her previous best time.
In the 400 meters, Molly Van Horn (Granville, Ohio) just missed 60 seconds with a 1:00.30 as she finished second overall. Nikane Ambos (Wapakoneta, Ohio) led the trio of 400 meter personal records with 1:03.08 in seventh place. Kassydee Owens (Harlan, Kentucky) had a 1:03.57 time for tenth. Grace Pitt shaved three seconds off of her previous best with a 1:08.11 in 15th place.
Van Horn and Armbrust were third and fourth overall in the 200 meters with respective times of 26.05 and 26.11 seconds. G'nae Morrison (San Antonio, Texas) followed closely in seventh at 26.84 seconds. Ambos (28.15 seconds) and Pitt (30.11 seconds) each set PR's with Owens sitting in the middle of them at 28.34 seconds.
Morrison crossed the line in 8.27 seconds for the 60 meter prelims, a 10th place finish - just missing the finals.
For the second straight week, both Strawn siblings competed in the mile run and set a pair of personal bests. Jeralyn Strawn (Lancaster, Ohio) ran the fastest ODU mile of the season, 6:00.59 while Jaclyn Strawn (Lancaster, Ohio) finished at 6:05.31 - clearing her best time of the season by nearly 12 seconds.
Marie Pascaline Ndayshimye and Jadelyn McNerney (Springboro, Ohio) both hit shot put personal records as they hit marks of 9.20 meters and 8.86 meters for their resumes.
Kelsey Shaffer (Spencerville, Ohio) made her long jump debut with a 4.46 meter mark.
MEN
Eugene Boahen won the 60 meter dash finals with a 6.91 second time after he was third in the prelims with a 7.02 second mark. Boahen gained a fourth place finish in the 200 meters with his 2nd best run of the season, 22.26 seconds.
Owen Wilhelm (Sunbury, Ohio) finished third overall with a 1.91 meter best high jump, his second best mark of the season.
Ismael Obas (Columbus, Ohio) reached 6.62 meters as his best jump in the long jump on his fifth attempt. He ended the session with a fifth place finish.
Aly Diaby was fifth overall in the 400 meter race with his second best time of the season, 50.82 seconds. Blake Wilson ended in 11th for the 400 meters, running his heat in 52.20 seconds. Jaivien Steele (Cleveland, Ohio) cleared his previous PR by nearly a second, 53.88 seconds.
Manny Codjoe (Bolingbrook, Illinois), set a personal best in the 60 meter prelims of 7.14 seconds as the 12th fastest time.
Following Boahen in the 200 meters, there were five other Panthers in the race, including two personal bests. Diaby ran a 22.80 second race (PR) in 12th place. Wilson and Steele were back-to-back with times of 23.48 and 23.51 seconds (PR). Codjoe and Benjamin Seely (Chesterton, Indiana) finished with times of 23.54 seconds and 23.68 seconds, respectively.
Seely and Obas competed in the 60 meter dash qualifying races, both clocking in at 7.34 with exact times of 7.339 - the ninth best qualifying times.
Four of the five mile runners from Ohio Dominican set personal bests, including the top time of the season. Merrick Shorter (Dublin, Ohio) had the best time of 4:28.45 in 17th place. Jacob Krous (Galena, Ohio) followed in second for the Panthers at 4:33.20, his PR in the event. Ethan Sinning (Tipp City, Ohio) clocked in at 4:36.25 for his best time of the campaign and his career. Landon Latham (Westland, Michigan) ran a season-best 4:57.17 mile. Edward Devaney (Lexington, Ohio) rounded out the quartet with a PR of 5:07.24.
Latham added a time of 2:09.67 in the 800 meters later in the event.
In his third shot put performance of the season, Tyler Hampton topped at 11.68 meters in a 26th place finish. Henry Pierce set a PR with a 11.20 meter throw.
The Panthers will compete at the Great Midwest Championships next weekend at Ashland.
