Three Players in Double Figures Aid Panthers in Michigan

MIDLAND, Michigan - The Ohio Dominican Panthers men's basketball team had three players in double figures as they completed the season sweep against the Northwood Timberwolves on Saturday (Feb. 18) afternoon. 

Making their first trip to Riepma Arena in over eight years, the Panthers earned a hard-fought road win, 69-64 over the Timberwolves. With the win, Ohio Dominican enters the final week of the regular season with a 9-16 record and 5-13 G-MAC record. 

BOX SCORE NOTES

  • Zach Szul (Waterville, Ohio) gained his eighth game of 20 or more points this season as he led all scorers with 25 points overall. The junior had four rebounds and two assists in his stat line after shooting eight-of-14 overall and nine-of-11 at the free throw line. He was one of two players in the game with double figures within the first half as he scored 13 points. 
  • For the second time this season, Jarius Jones (Gahanna, Ohio) tallied a double-double. He was three-of-three at the charity stripe in addition to five field goals made. Jones scored 13 points with 11 rebounds and four steals. His four steals equaled a career-best. 
  • Sean Marks (Delaware, Ohio) notched his tenth game in double-figures on four field goals, one three pointer and one free throw. He led the Panthers with three assists in 35 minutes. 
  • Ethan Haynes (Florence, Kentucky) hit three triples in the game for nine total points along with two assists and two steals and a block. 
  • Keshawn Heard (Newark, Ohio) put up six points with four boards and two dimes. 
  • ODU shot 51.7% (15-29) in the first half, before finishing at a 45.3% (24-53) clip for the game. The Timberwolves ended the game with a 52.8% shooting percentage. 
  • The Panthers were 16-of-20 at the free-throw line, winning that category over Northwood, who shot 42.9% (3-7). 
  • Ohio Dominican led the categories of assists (12-11), turnovers (12-15), steals (10-3). 
  • While forcing 15 turnovers, the Panthers turned that into 21 points. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The game was tied three times in the first three minutes. 
  • Trailing 6-4, the Panthers scored six straight points with a three-point play from Jones and a three by Haynes to take a 10-6 lead. 
  • The ODU lead fluctuated between three and five points until Marks scored six consecutive points as the lead grew to nine, 23-14 at the halfway point of the first half. 
  • Northwood got the lead down to two (27-25) but ODU led by as many as seven before halftime, taking a 41-36 lead into the locker room. 
    • In the final 8:40 of the first half, Szul scored 13 of the final 18 points, including the final nine points of the period. 
  • In the first three minutes of the second half, Northwood continued to trim the lead to two points. 
  • Marks drilled a three pointer with 9:39 left to give the Panthers a 55-47 lead. 
  • Northwood went on a 10-2 run to tie the game at 57 over the next four minutes. 
  • Szul scored five straight points and six of the next eight points as ODU answered with an 8-0 run. Heard added a basket on the rally for the Panthers to hold a 65-57 lead with 2:23 to go. 
  • The Timberwolves tried to get back but Szul and Heard closed out the game with points in the final minute.

The Panthers will return home for Senior Night in the home finale on Thursday (Feb. 23) against Kentucky Wesleyan, starting at 7:30 PM.
