Volleyball Secures Postseason Spot With Five Set Victory At Walsh

NORTH CANTON, Ohio – On Saturday afternoon, the Ohio Dominican volleyball team traveled to Walsh University for their regular season finale. The Panthers battled through five sets to take down the top team in the G-MAC, 3-2, securing their spot in the postseason conference tournament and marking their fifth straight victory.

  • Grabbing a new career high kills was sophomore Jenna Peters (Vermilion, Ohio) with 21. Following her was Lauren Lucas (Grove City, Ohio) with 18 kills and Ashley Aselage (Tipp City, Ohio) with 13 kills.
  • Four players netted double digit digs with Kelsey Shoup (Dalton, Ohio) leading the way with 18. Senior Alexis Keipert (Burlington, Ky.) had 16 with Lucas following with 12, adding her 12th double-double of the season. Gabrielle Kirker (Tallmadge, Ohio) was the last with 11 digs.
  • Kirker added 27 assists, one behind Saige Avery (Yorkville, Ill.), who had 28. Kirker led the team with six service aces. Joining her was Shoup with four and Avery with three.
How It Happened
  • The two traded points in the opening set before the Cavs went on a seven-point swing, making it 12-8. The Panthers brought it within one with back-to-back services ace from Kirker. Once again, the two went back and forth, all the way to the end with Walsh winning the set, 25-23.
  • More of the same happened in the second set as both teams fought for the lead. No one led more than two points before the Black and Gold went up 23-20 with a 4-0 run. A kill from Peters gave ODU the second set, 25-23.
  • In the third set, Walsh started strong, taking a 10-5 lead that eventually grew to 13-6. Ohio Dominican brought it within two after four consecutive points, making it 18-16. The Cavs answered by winning six of the last eight points to win it 25-19.
  • The two went point for point in the fourth set with ODU running to an 11-7 lead after two kills and a solo block from Peters. The Cavaliers brought it within one, but the Panthers stayed strong, ending the set on a 9-3 run, winning it 25-18.
  • In the winner takes all set, the Black and Gold fought for a 6-4 lead with blocks from Peters, Ashley Chmielewski (Roscommon, Mich.), and Ava Horn (Whitehouse, Ohio). Another kill from Peters allowed ODU to win the race to eight. From there, the two traded points before Ohio Dominican collected a Peters kill and consecutive service aces from Shoup to win the set, 15-11, and the game, 3-2.
