Panthers Take Down Storm In Four Sets

COLUMBUS, Ohio – On Friday evening, the Ohio Dominican volleyball team opened Homecoming weekend by hosting the Storm of Lake Erie College. The Panthers finished the match strong after dropping the first set to win the match, 3-1.

  • Leading the way for the Black and Gold from the front row was Jenna Peters (Vermilion, Ohio) with 17 kills. The sophomore records her third straight double-figure kill game. Peters added five digs and three blocks.
  • Joining Peters in double digit kills was Lauren Lucas (Grove City, Ohio) with 12. The junior grabbed her eighth double-double of the season as she collected 12 digs. Lucas notched five blocks.
  • In the middle, Grace Zinchuk (Schaumburg, Ill.) and Ava Horn (Whitehouse, Ohio) combined for 17 kills and 10 blocks. The sophomore had nine kills and four blocks with the freshman grabbing eight kills and six blocks.
  • In the setter position, Gabrielle Kirker (Tallmadge, Ohio) dished out 23 assists. Following her was Saige Avery (Yorkville, Ill.) with 18 assists. Kirker netted seven digs with Avery tallying six digs and a team high of four service aces.
  • In the back row, senior Kelsey Shoup (Dalton, Ohio) snagged 22 digs, her eighth 20+ dig game and her 15th consecutive double-figure dig game. Alongside her was Alexis Keipert (Burlington, Ky.) with 12 digs.
How It Happened
  • The two went point-for-point in the opening set with Lake Erie pulling away, 10-7, with a four-point swing. Ohio Dominican answered with five consecutive points, including a service ace from Shoup, to take a 12-10 lead. Neither team led for more than a point until the Storm won five of the last seven points to win the set 25-22.
  • In the second set, the Black and Gold opened with a 7-3 lead off a service ace from Avery. Peters recorded four kills in a row, allowing the Panthers a 13-6 lead. Zinchuk, Lucas, and Ashley Chmielewski (Roscommon, Mich.) combined for three consecutive blocks, pushing their lead to 22-11 before ending the match on a kills from Peters, winning the second set 25-15.
  • ODU ran out to a 7-1 lead in the third set. Two service aces from Avery grew the Panthers lead to 11-3. The Black and Gold remained in the lead, winning seven of the last nine points to take the third set 25-11, making it 2-1 in sets.
  • With a chip on their shoulder heading into the fourth set, LEC quickly took a 7-4 lead. Ohio Dominican responded with a four-point run to take a one-point lead. The two traded points until the Black and Gold made some space with a six-point swing, making it 21-15. The Panthers remained strong, winning four of the final five points to win the set 25-18, and the match, 3-1.
