HAMMOND, Ind. – This weekend, the Ohio Dominican volleyball team traveled to the annual Midwest Region Crossover. On the second day of the Crossover, the Ohio Dominican volleyball team split the day with a 3-1 win over Missouri S&T and a 3-1 loss to Wayne State.
Box Score Notes
- Senior Kelsey Shoup (Dalton, Ohio) led the way with 28 digs in the two games. Shoup added eight assists and a service ace. Following her was Alexis Keipert (Burlington, Ky.) with 18 digs. The senior recorded 7 service aces on the day.
- In the front row, for Panthers netted 20+ kills on Saturday. In the lead was Grace Zinchuk (Schaumburg, Ill.) and Ashley Aselage (Tipp City, Ohio) with 24 a piece. Zinchuk added seven blocks with Aselage accounting for four. Joining them was Jenna Peters (Vermilion, Ohio) with 22 and Lauren Lucas (Grove City, Ohio) with 20. Lucas grabbed seven service aces and 16 digs. Freshman Ava Horn (Whitehouse, Ohio) tallied five blocks.
- Both setters put up great numbers with Gabrielle Kirker (Tallmadge, Ohio) collecting 52 assists and Saige Avery (Yorkville, Ill.) snagging 38. Kirker added 12 digs and Avery had 17. Avery also had eight kills and a block.
How It Happened
Missouri S&T
- The Panthers grabbed the first two points in the opening set before the Miners added five straight, taking a 5-2 lead. The two traded points until ODU snagged six-points in a row off of three kills and a block, taking the lead 18-15. The Black and Gold remained in the lead the rest of the set, winning it 25-22.
- In the second set, roles were reversed with Ohio Dominican jumping to an early 5-1 lead. ODU pushed their lead to 17-12 but S&T responded with a four-point swing of their own, bringing it within one. The Panthers took another five-point lead late and eventually took the second match 25-21.
- In the third set, ODU had a 7-5 lead early but went behind 19-10 after a 10-1 run from the Miners. The Black and Gold never recovered, losing the set 25-14, making it 2-1 in sets.
- The Black and Gold opened the fourth set with an 8-1 lead. S&T brought it within one, 11-10, with a five-point swing. The two went back-and-forth with ODU rallying late with four consecutive points, winning the set 25-23, and the game, 3-1.
Wayne State
- The two traded points in the opening set with the Panthers pulling ahead 10-4 off kills from Zinchuk and Ashley Chmielewski (Roscommon, Mich.). Ohio Dominican continued to lead, even after a six-point run from the Warriors, taking the first set 25-19.
- WSU began the second set with a 7-2 run before the Black and Gold brought it within one with two service aces from Lucas. The Warriors went ahead 16-9 but ODU responded with an 8-1 run to tie it at 17-all. Wayne State rallied late, taking seven of the last eight points, to win 25-19.
- In the third set, the two went point-for-point with Wayne State creating space after a 7-2 run, making it 14-10. ODU had a few runs of their own, tying it at 16 and 19. The two battles until the end but a late push from the Warriors gave them a 25-23 win, making it 2-1 in sets.
- With the game on the kine in the fourth set, no one led more than a point until Wayne State took a 14-12 lead off of an ODU error. The lead changed to the Panthers after a service ace from Zinchuk, making it 16-15. The Black and Gold took a 23-19 lead after three kills and four points. The Warriors brought it within one and eventually tied it at 24-all, forcing extra points. The two traded points again until WSU ended on a three-point run, winning the set 29-27, and the game, 3-1.
