Second Half Run Fuels Panthers, 61-49

COLUMBUS - The Ohio Dominican Panthers men's basketball team buckled down in the second half to snap a three-game losing streak on Thursday (Dec. 8) evening at Alumni Hall. 

Ohio Dominican outscored the Northwood Timberwolves 35-20 in the second half, and 29-12 in the final 15 minutes for a 61-49 win. With the win, Ohio Dominican is 3-5 overall and 1-2 in the G-MAC. The Panthers defeated Northwood for the third straight contest. 

BOX SCORE NOTES

  • Zach Szul (Waterville, Ohio) led the Panthers in scoring for the fourth straight game, scoring 17 points on seven-of-15 shooting. Szul made one three pointer and two free throws with three rebounds, four assists and one steal. 
  • Kayin Derden (Columbus, Ohio) scored a career-high 11 points off the bench with three triples. Derden had one of Ohio Dominican's four blocks on the night. 
  • Marcus Johnson (Columbus, Ohio) earned his first double-double with 11 points and ten rebounds. He grabbed four offensive rebounds, most of all players on Thursday. He set a new career-best in rebounds, topping his best of eight. 
  • Nate Webb (Lafayette, Indiana) knocked down a pair of threes and free throws to score eight points with five rebounds. 
  • Sean Marks (Delaware, Ohio) had six points and two steals. 
  • The Panthers shot 37.3% from the floor, making 22 of 59 shot attempts.
  • After taking one free throw attempt in the first half, ODU converted ten of 11 tries in the second half to finish 10-of-12 at the line. 
  • Ohio Dominican won the rebounding battle with a 38-36 edge. 
  • The Panthers set a season low in turnovers with 13. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Northwood made the first basket with ODU responding on a Szul jumper one minute in, tying the game at two. 
  • Over the next six minutes, Northwood went on a 15-6 run to take a 17-9 lead with 13:29 left in the first half. 
  • Ohio Dominican went on a 12-4 rally, including three treys as Webb tied the contest at 21 with a triple at the 6:34 mark. 
  • Northwood closed the half with eight straight points before ODU scored five straight points. The game had Northwood leading 29-26 at halftime. 
  • Caleb Laurich (Akron, Ohio) scored the first four points of the second half as ODU took a brief 30-29 lead 64 seconds in. 
  • Northwood went on an 8-2 run, opening a 37-32 lead with 15:18 left in regulation. 
  • The Panthers responded with a 10-0 run over the next four minutes and 14-1 run over seven minutes for a 46-38 lead with 8:11 to go. 
    • Derden scored five straight points, including the game-tying three pointer. He later scored another three pointer to have eight points during the run.
  • With a 46-38 Panther lead, Northwood trimmed the lead to 46-44 with six straight points. 
  • ODU closed the game with a 15-5 run as they opened the largest lead of the night - 12 in the final minute. 
  • One of the key stretches of the game came with Northwood leading 37-32. The Panthers posted a 14-1 run that turned a five-point deficit into a 46-38 lead for ODU.
  • Northwood responded with six straight points to get within two at 46-44, only to see the Panthers go on an 11-3 run to get the lead back to 10 with 2:12 remaining.
