ASHLAND, Ohio – Alek West (Sylvania, Ohio) recorded his third double-double of the season, but it was not enough as the Ohio Dominican men's basketball team fell on the road in Great Midwest action Thursday evening to Ashland, 65-51.
West, for the second consecutive Thursday night game, registered a double-double, tallying 21 points and 10 rebounds against the Eagles. Both marks led ODU, while his four assists were also a team high. West was 7-for-11 from the field, including a 4-of-6 mark from behind the arc.
Zach Szul (Waterville, Ohio) and Mitch Wilkinson (Grand Rapids, Mich.) each posted nine points. Wilkinson also led ODU with a pair of steals defensively.
The Panthers and Eagles each traded long scoring runs in the first half. ODU used an 11-2 spurt to capture its largest advantage of the game, 10 points, at 20-10 at the 7:53 mark. Ashland responded though with a 23-2 run to end the first half and take a 33-22 advantage into the intermission.
The Eagles continued to improve on their lead in the second half, extending the advantage to as many as 19 points, 57-38, with 8:15 remaining. ODU rallied to close the deficit to 12 points after a triple from West and two three-pointers from Wilkinson made the score 61-49 with just over five minutes to play.
Ohio Dominican was held to just two just points in the final five minutes though, falling 65-51. The Panthers made one of their final five field goal attempts.
ODU returns to action with a 3 p.m. road contest at Tiffin on Saturday, Jan. 22.
