Shorthanded Panthers Battle No. 7 Findlay

FINDLAY, Ohio – With only eight players available, the Ohio Dominican men's basketball team led for most of the first half but could not withstand a second half surge from No. 7 Findlay Thursday evening, falling on the road, 96-60. 

RECORDS

  • Findlay's win is its fourth straight, improving the Oilers to 10-1 overall and 9-1 in Great Midwest play. Findlay also moves to 7-0 at home with the win.
  • Ohio Dominican falls to 3-4 overall but is still .500 in conference play with the loss, 3-3.

INDIVIDUAL NUMBERS

  • After scoring a career-high 22 points last time out against Tiffin, freshman Zach Szul (Waterford, Ohio) topped the mark Thursday with 23 points. Szul made his first three attempts from deep en route to a 6-for-9 shooting start. The freshman finished with eight field goals to go along with five rebounds and two steals.
  • Sophomore Ethan Haynes (Florence, Ky.) battled foul trouble all game, but was the only other Panther in double figures with 12 points.
  • Leading ODU on the glass for the second consecutive game was sophomore Matt Hall (Edwardsville, Ill.) with eight. Classmate Sean Marks (Delaware, Ohio) had a team-best six assists, giving him five-plus dimes in six consecutive outings.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After suffering an early deficit, ODU used a 10-0 scoring run, highlighted by two Szul triples, to take a 20-15 lead at the 11:25 mark of the first half.
  • The Panthers made seven of their first eight attempts from deep and led 30-26 with just under eight minutes remaining in the opening stanza.
  • Despite 17 first half points from Szul and 8-of-13 shooting from beyond the arc, ODU still trailed at the break, as Findlay closed the first half on a 6-0 run to lead 40-38.
  • The Panthers were held scoreless over the final 4:14 of the first half.
  • The Oilers continued their strong shooting in the second half, and scored 14 of the first 19 points out of the break to quickly take a double digit advantage.

GAME NOTES

  • ODU made 10 triples in the contest, marking the third time this season the team has made double-digit shots from behind the arc.
  • Findlay made 38-of-64 field goal attempts, giving them a .576 shooting clip. The performance is the highest percentage against the Panthers this season.
  • The Oilers' 56 second half points are the most by any opponent of ODU this year.

UP NEXT

  • Ohio Dominican will stay on the road to face another top 15 nationally ranked opponent in Hillsdale.
  • The Panthers and No. 15 Chargers are scheduled for a 3 p.m. start, Saturday, Jan. 30.
