Box Score PHILLIPI, W. Va. – A three point shot from Michael Simon (Hilliard, Ohio) with 0.3 seconds remaining in regulation sent Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team to overtime for the fourth time this season where they edged Alderson Broaddus by a final score of 88-82.
In the overtime period, Michael Scott (Hebron, Ky.) led the Panthers scoring six points including the first four to give ODU its first lead of the game at 80-78. After a defensive stop, Simon nailed another clutch three with 2:52 to play to push the Panther lead to 83-78.
The Battlers would make it 83-82 on a layup from Bruce Spruell and out of a Panther timeout, ODU went to Varence inside where he scored a layup to push the lead to three and another defensive stop allowed Scott to push the Panther lead back to five at 87-82 on his layup.
After trailing by as many as 16 points with 18:31 remaining in the second half, the Panthers began to mount their comeback trimming away at their deficit little by little throughout the second half. The Panthers trimmed their deficit to 10 at 47-37 on a Sean Marks (Delaware, Ohio) layup before AB answered with a 5-0 run to push their lead back to 15 with 13:17 to play in regulation.
ODU would cut their deficit to just five at 58-53 on a Scott layup with 9:03 to play and would get their deficit to four at 70-66 with 3:17 to play on a Varence three, the closest they had been since it was 4-0 at the beginning of the contest.
A Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) three would tie the game at 73-73 with 1:36 to play, the first tie of the game, before AB would answer with a three of their own from David Shriver with 22 seconds in regulation. Then, after a Hickey miss from distance to tie the game, Scott was able to grab a loose ball rebound and find Simon behind the arc to tie the game at 76-76.
In the first half, AB jumped out to a 19-9 lead and eventually took a 36-24 lead into the half where the Panthers shot just 34.8% (8-for-23) while the Battlers shot 50% (12-for-24) including 54.5% (6-for-11 from three.
In total, the Panthers shot 49.2% (30-for-61) and 42.9% (12-for-28) from behind the arc while AB shot just 42.4% (28-for-66) including 2-for-10 in the overtime period and 37.9% (11-for-29) from three.
The Panthers had four players in double-figures led by Hickey who scored 21points while both Hasan Varence (Queens, New York) and Michael Scott each had double-doubles. Varence finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds while Scott finished with 17 points, a career-high 11 assists and six rebounds. Scott's 11 assists on the night were the most since Luke Lyle had 10 against Milligan College on December 22, 2004.
ODU advances to 6-9 overall and gets back to .500 in the conference at 3-3 while Alderson Broaddus falls to 2-11 overall and 1-4 in the G-MAC.
The Panthers have the midweek off before hosting Hillsdale on Saturday, December 11 with tip set for 1 p.m. in Alumni Hall.
