COLUMBUS, Ohio -- In a rematch of last year's conference championship, the Ohio Dominican women's soccer team fell to No. 4 Grand Valley State 3-0 at home in Panther Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
ODU has now suffered just their second conference loss this season and will move to 7-5-0 overall (6-2-0 GLIAC) as they currently sit in third place in the GLIAC.
In a game that was neck-and-neck the entire first half, the Panthers surrendered three second half goals to the Lakers (12-1-0, 8-0-0 GLIAC) and as GVSU to came away with the victory. Katie Klunder, Marti Corby and Mackenzie Fox all scored one goal apiece for the Lakers.
ODU put up a defensive fight against the top scoring team in the league which hosts the GLIAC leader in goals scored in Corby (16) as they held the Lakers scoreless until the 47th minute when Klunder found the back of the net for the first goal of the game. Fox and Clunder followed shortly thereafter scoring in the 53rd and 54th minute, respectively.
Much of the first-half defensive stand by the Panthers can be contributed to freshman goal-keeper Marissa Wierzbicki (Columbus, OH) who had nine saves on the day and stood strong between the pipes in her first career matchup with the two time defending national champions. Wierzbicki made a key save in the opening half, diving to the left post on a penalty shot taken by the Lakers.
GVSU controlled the ball for most of the game taking a total of 25 shots while the Panthers were limited to seven. The Lakers also took six corner kicks compared to three from ODU.
ODU will have a quick turnaround when they return to action with an out of conference match at 7 p.m. this Thursday, October 15 when they host California University of Pennsylvania.
