Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Ohio Dominican's women's basketball team was outrebounded 48-39 and committed 19 turnovers as the Panthers fell 81-67 to Lake Superior on Thursday in GLIAC play.
The setback dropped ODU to 4-9 (1-6 GLIAC), while the Lakers improved to 6-5 (2-5 GLIAC).
The Panthers shot just 36.4 percent (20-of-55), compared to 40.6 (26-of-64) percent for the Lakers. LSSU grabbed 15 offensive rebounds, leading to 18 points and the Panthers, despite being in the bonus for the majority of the second half, shot just 61.3 percent from the free throw line (19-of-31).
Sophomore forward Jackie Oestreich (Brighton, Mich.) scored a career-high 10 points to go with six rebounds while senior guard Kacee Hockenberry (Haviland, Ohio) added 14 points along with seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Kayla Cook (Westerville, Ohio) had a season high eight points off the bench, and junior forward Melissa Scherpenberg (Cincinnati, Ohio) grabbed eight rebounds.
The Panthers had a pair of four point leads early in the game, but a 13-2 Laker run in the first half put the hosts up 23-16 with 7:33 to play. The lead grew to as much as 10 as the Lakers would take a 36-29 lead into the break.
ODU trailed by as much as 13 early in the second half but drew within six, 62-56, with six minutes left after a pair of free throws by sophomore forward Madi Rittinger (Dayton, Ohio), but the Lakers scored the next five points and the Panthers would not draw closer than nine down the stretch.
The Panthers are back in action at 1 p.m. Saturday at Northwood.
