Box Score COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 5 Ferris State stunned No. 4 Ohio Dominican in the 2013 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Tuesday afternoon as the Panthers fell to the Bulldogs in a 3-0 penalty kick shootout.
Ohio Dominican gained the early advantage in the 20th minute after freshman Kelly Johnson (Berea, Ohio) connected on her fifth goal of the season after fellow freshman Courtney Kozak (Millersburg, Ohio) sent a cross into the box for Johnson to hit home.
The Panthers controlled much of the play on both sides on the field in Tuesday's match, outshooting the Eagles 22-14 for the game.
In the 72nd minute, Abby Meirndorf tied the game 1-1 on a counter shot by Casey Shuman.
The two teams battled to a deadlock in regulation and neither team was able to find the back of the net in two periods of overtime action.
In the penalty kick shootout, the Panthers would have the first opportunity to score. Freshman Alexa Scardina (Cincinnati, Ohio) sent a rocket to the right side of the goal, but a diving stop by Bulldog goalkeeper Rachel McCollum kept ODU at bay.
It was the Bulldogs turn and Amanda Foster delivered to give Ferris State a 1-0 advantage. Sophomore Lauren Pratt (West Chester, Ohio) tried to even the score but another key save by McCollum stopped the opportunity.
Amanda Mathy extended the Bulldog after lobbing her kick over junior Laura Clark's (Lapeer, Mich.) head.
Johnson tried to keep the Panthers hopes alive but once again McCollum made a diving stop to keep the 2-0 lead.
Casey Shaumen ended the contest with her penalty kick, giving the Bulldogs the win and advancing to the semifinals.
