Women's Basketball Drops 67-60 Decision to Wayne State

Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Junior forward Katelyn Stuckey (Millersburg, Ohio) had a game-high 22 points with 10 rebounds but it wasn't enough as Ohio Dominican's women's basketball team fell 67-60 to visiting Wayne State Saturday in GLIAC play at Alumni Hall.

The Panthers (3-2, 0-2 GLIAC) out-shot Wayne State (2-2, 2-0 GLIAC) in the contest, but committed 22 turnovers which resulted in 20 Warrior points, and also allowed 17 offensive rebounds.

Stuckey made 9-of-15 shots for her first career double-double, scoring 11 points in each frame and hauling down five offensive boards. She was joined in double figures by freshman forward Melissa Scherpenberg (Cincinnati, Ohio), who had 12 points and nine rebounds with two blocks, and sophomore guard Paige Stought (Pickerington, Ohio), who finished with 11.

Overall, the Panthers shot 41.4 percent from the field (24-of-58) while Wayne State went 25-of-67 (37.3 percent), but WSU hit 8-of-17 from beyond the arc (47.1 percent) and turned their 17 offensive rebounds into 11 second chance points.

ODU hit six of its first 10 shots and went on a 13-4 run to take a 13-9 lead in the first half. Stuckey scored six points during that spurt. Wayne State answered with the next eight, though, grabbing a 17-13 advantage midway through the period.

The Panthers knotted the game at 25-25 on a Scherpenberg tip-in, but Wayne State came back with an 11-2 burst to go in front 36-27 with 30 seconds left in the half. Scherpenberg drilled a three-pointer as time expired to cut the deficit to 36-30 at intermission.

The opening 11 minutes of the second half was played between a two and seven point window, with the Panthers trimming their deficit to 40-38 on a Kacee Hockenberry (Haviland, Ohio) layup at the 17:06 mark, but getting no closer. Leading 49-46, Wayne State scored the next 10 points to take its biggest lead at 59-46 with 6:49 to play.

ODU didn't go quietly, though. Consecutive jumpers by Stought cut the deficit to seven, and Stuckey made a layup to make it 64-59 with 2:51 left.

The Panthers, though, would miss their final six field goal attempts, and Wayne State made three-of-four free throws to close it.

Ohio Dominican returns to action on Thursday, Dec. 6 with an 8 p.m. tipoff at Ferris State.
