Box Score UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – For the second straight contest, Ohio Dominican's women's basketball team took a lead into the halftime break, but yet again were undone by cold shooting in the second half as Saginaw Valley State (Mich.) rallied for the 62-49 GLIAC home win Saturday afternoon.
A steal and lay-in by freshman Kacee Hockenberry (Haviland, OH) 19 seconds into the start of the second gave the Panthers their largest lead of the day at 30-24. After the Cardinals reclaimed the lead at 31-30 with 14:23 remaining, Hockenberry connected on pair of free throws and sophomore Christina Pentaudi (Dayton, OH) netted her first triple to put ODU back ahead four, 35-31, with 12:48 on the clock.
However, that would be the last lead for the Panthers as Saginaw Valley strung together a 14-2 run for a 45-37 advantage with eight and half to play. ODU countered with a quick 5-0 spurt to close within three at the 7:23 mark as Pentaudi followed classmate Katelyn Stuckey's (Millersburg, OH) lay-up with her second trey. Once again the Cardinals answered, this time with a 13-0 run to put the game out of reach, 58-42, with under four remaining.
After shooting 41.4 percent (12-of-29) in the first, the Panthers were held to just six field goals on 22.2 percent shooting in the second, including one basket over the final seven minutes. SVSU ended the day 24-of-53 (45.3 percent) from the field, including 13-of-31 (41.9 percent) and 10-of-15 at the stripe in the second, outscoring ODU 38-21 in the half.
The Cardinals (4-15, 2-10 GLIAC) jumped out to a 9-2 lead less than four minutes into the game and continued to hold a slim advantage until the midway point of the first, hitting on seven of their first 11 attempts. The Panthers eventually rallied to knot the game at 13-13 on Hockenberry's first triple and took their first lead of the day at 17-16 at the 7:50 mark as senior Abby Glover (Centerville, OH) and freshman Paige Stought (Pickerington, OH) finished back-to-back lay-ins. Behind six of Glover's team-high 13 points over the final 3:18, ODU closed the half on a 9-2 run, including the last seven points for the 28-24 halftime lead.
Hockenberry finished with 11 points and Stuckey added eight, while Glover also collected a team-high nine rebounds.
Kristen Greene paced the Cardinals with 21 points and center Grace Herzog tallied eight points and game-highs of 14 rebounds and seven blocks.
ODU (6-13, 2-11 GLIAC) returns home next Thursday, Feb. 2 as GLIAC leader and current No. 9 Ashland brings an 18-game winning streak to Alumni Hall for a 5:30 p.m. tip.
