Box Score COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio Dominican's women's basketball team grabbed a five-point lead with under eight minutes to play Saturday afternoon against visiting Wayne State, however the Warriors outscored the Panthers 20-11 in the final 7:05 to sneak away with the 74-70 win.
WSU (10-8, 5-6 GLIAC) gradually built a 34-33 halftime lead to its largest of the day 53-46 with 11:44 left to play. A 13-1 run, sparked by freshman Paige Stought's (Pickerington, OH) three-pointer and capped by 10 straight points by senior Meredith Fox (Springboro, OH), put ODU back on top 59-54 at the 7:56 mark. The Warriors countered with a 14-3 run over the ensuing 5:34 for a 68-62 margin and the game's final lead change as WSU closed the day 7-of-9 and 4-of-6 at the stripe.
For the second straight contest, the Panthers' offense was in sync to open the game as ODU (6-11, 2-9 GLIAC) built a 21-14 advantage midway through the first. Wayne State charged back with a 16-3 run, connecting on 10 of its first 15 shots for a 30-24 edge with 4:31 left in the half. Sophomore Katelyn Stuckey (Millersburg, OH) followed with back-to-back field goals, senior Abby Glover (Centerville, OH) connected on a pair at the line and sophomore Christina Pentaudi (Dayton, OH) stuck back an offensive rebound in the closing seconds to send ODU into the break down one.
After getting outrebounded 58-31 and shooting just 26.3 percent (20-of-76) in the teams' first meeting back December, the Panthers finished today 26-of-56 (46.4 percent) and held a 31-29 edge on the boards. Fox paced ODU with 19 points on 7-of-16 from the floor, while Glover added 15 on 5-of-8 shooting and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. Freshman Kacee Hockenberry (Haviland, OH) filled the stat line with eight points, three rebounds and team-highs of five assists and two steals, while Stought tallied eight points off the bench, including her first two collegiate triples.
Paige Sickmiller led four in double digits for WSU with 20 points, knocking down 8-of-14 and 4-of-5 from behind the arc as the Warriors ended the game 31-of-55 (56.4 percent) from the floor.
ODU returns to the road next week with a two-game GLIAC swing through Michigan, beginning with a 5:30 p.m. tip against Lake Superior State on Thursday.
