Miraculous Comeback Effort Falls Short as Urbana Sneaks Away with 56-52 Victory

Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Trailing by 25 points just before halftime to Urbana Wednesday evening, Ohio Dominican's women's basketball team mounted an unbelievable comeback to cut the deficit to one point on two separate occasions late in the game, but several missed opportunities allowed the Blue Knights to escape Alumni Hall with the 56-52 non-conference win.

Trailing 51-47 with 2:49 left to play in the game, Abby Glover (Jr./Centerville, OH) hit her first look at a three-pointer to bring the Panthers within one. However, the Blue Knights were able to go back up three with 1:44 remaining after a jumper by Andrea Vogel.

ODU missed two shots on its ensuing possession, but two of Summer Hale's (Sr./Galena, OH) season-high 11 rebounds allowed Melissa Hersey (Sr./West Chester, OH) to hit a jumper and pull the Panthers back within a point, 53-52, with 48 seconds left. ODU regained possession after a missed Urbana three, but the Panthers missed on two free throw attempts with 12 ticks on the clock. After an ODU foul, the Blue Knights left the door open for the Panthers, missing both free throw opportunities, but Unique Lane snagged the offensive board and finished off an old-fashioned three-point play, rolling in a free throw for the final tally.

Tracy Snider (Jr./Lancaster, OH) provided the initial spark for the Panthers, lining up a triple with 25 seconds left in the first to cut the Panther deficit to 38-16 at half. ODU continued the momentum through the break, scoring the first seven points of the second half to pull within 38-23. Urbana hit a jumper to end the run, but the Panthers quickly added nine more unanswered points as part of a 19-4 run over both halves that brought the score to 40-32 with 14:26 remaining in the game.

The Panthers (6-17, 4-12 GLIAC) improved to 15-of-34 (44.1 percent) from the field after struggling in the opening half, shooting 6-of-31 (19.4 percent) and 2-of-16 (12.5 percent) from behind the arc as Urbana (8-13) rolled to a 38-16 halftime advantage behind a 15-of-28 (53.6 percent) shooting effort.

Glover paced ODU with 12 points, while Meredith Fox (Jr./Springboro, OH) added 11. Summer Swetlic (Sr./Mt. Vernon, OH) matched her career high of nine points on a career-best 3-of-6 shooting from long range.

The Blue Knights finished 23-of-48 (47.9 percent) from the field, led by Vogel with a game-high 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting and 11 rebounds. Lane added 13 and Ashley Falknor finished with 10 off the bench.

ODU resumes GLIAC play at 3 p.m. this Saturday, Feb. 19 as the Panthers welcome Tiffin to Alumni Hall for the first game of the season series.
