The Ohio Dominican women's tennis team concluded their Central Michigan swing on Sunday afternoon taking on women's tennis newcomer Hillsdale College. Doubles proved the difference again as the Panthers were able to sweep all three courts on their way to the 8-1 GLIAC win.
Taking early leads in all three courts helped ODU build early momentum in doubles play. On court one, Sofia Espana-Perez (So./Mexico City, Mexico) and Aline Mariano (Jr./Sao Paulo, Brazil) grabbed an early 3-0 lead before claiming a 8-4 win over a solid Hillsdale team. On court two, the Panther team of Krista Derry (Jr./Baltimore, OH) and Anita Girizd (Fr./Ada, Serbia) jumped out to a 5-2 lead and never looked back, winning 8-2. The #3 duo of Mari Monaco (Sr./Port Clinton, OH) and Hanna Ukhal (Jr./ Uzhgorod, Ukraine) recovered from their tough loss yesterday, rebounding for a strong 8-2 win.
The Panthers continued their strong play in singles action, taking 5-of-6 courts. Earning singles points for the Panthers was Espana-Perez and Mariano on courts one and three, 6-4, 0-6, 10-6 and 6-1, 6-1. Derry and Monaco also earned wins on courts four and five, 6-1, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-2, while April Zaborsky (Jr./Dublin, OH) won a tight first set 7-6 (0) before claiming a lopsided 6-1 win in the second set.
ODU will jump out of conference play on Tuesday, October 4 as they welcome for AMC foe Cedarville University to Panther Courts for a 4:30 p.m. match.
