Late Surge Lifts Chargers Past Panthers in Overtime

Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Leading by five points with less than three minutes remaining in overtime, Ohio Dominican's women's basketball team appeared in line to collect its second GLIAC victory in as many games, however, a late run by Hillsdale (Mich.) lifted the Chargers to a 61-57 victory Thursday night in Alumni Hall.

A Katy Rasor (Jr./Grove City, OH) three-pointer and two free throws by Meredith Fox (Jr./Springboro, OH) put the Panthers up 57-52 with 2:57 left to play in the extra session, but after two Charger free throws cut the deficit to three, Chelsea Harrison played the spoiler role, scoring the middle five points of a 9-0 run to close the game, including the go-ahead trey with 48 seconds remaining helping Hillsdale improve to 9-2 and 4-2 in the GLIAC, while ODU falls to 2-10 and 1-6.

Just over five minutes into the second half, Hillsdale erased ODU's 22-21 halftime lead and was able to stretch the lead to 35-28 at the 11:39 mark after a 10-2 spurt. The Panthers quickly answered as a Shelley Warren (Jr./Solon, OH) jumper sparked three straight ODU baskets over a 40 second span to even the score at 35-35.

The game remained tight over the next six minutes as neither team could gain separation of more than three points before Christina Pentaudi (Fr./Dayton, OH) nailed a triple with 4:19 on the clock to put the Panthers up 50-46. Six unanswered points put the Chargers back up two, 52-50, but a strong post move by Abby Glover (Jr./Centerville) squared the game and gave ODU the opportunity for the win in regulation. After three missed shots by Hillsdale, a three-point attempt by Rasor with four seconds left rattled in-and-out and Summer Hale's (Sr./Galena, OH) offensive putback was waved off as time expired.

Despite shooting just 30.0 percent (9-for-30) in the first half, ODU entered the break leading for just the third time this season as a strong defensive effort held the Chargers to just 23.8 percent (5-for-21) shooting. Back-to-back jumpers by Warren and Glover gave the Panthers a seven point cushion with just under three to play, but four straight free throws and a jumper allowed Hillsdale to close the half on a 6-0 run.

Glover was the lone Panther in double figures with a season high 16 points on 7-of-15 shooting to go along with nine rebounds. Hale finished with 10 boards for her third double digit rebounding effort of the season.

Laura Barczak led Hillsdale with 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting, while Harrison finished with 19.

ODU hits the road this Saturday, Jan.8 continuing GLIAC South Division play as they take on the Lake Erie Storm at 3 p.m. in Painesville, Ohio.
