COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Dominican's women's tennis team rebounded quickly from their 7-2 Ashland loss to defeat NCAA Division III foe Ohio Wesleyan University 8-1 at the Panther Tennis Courts on Wednesday.
The women jumped out to a quick start, capturing all three doubles courts handily. The number one doubles team of Sophia Espana-Perez (Mexico City, Mexico) and Aline Mariano (Sao Paulo, Brazil) won 8-0, the second doubles team of Ruchika Alahakoon (Colombo, Sri Lanka) and Nathalia Braga won by a score of 8-1 and the third doubles team of Krista Derry (Baltimore, OH) and Mari Monaco (Port Clinton, OH) remained unbeaten on the year, capturing their court 8-2.
In singles play, the women looked strong, taking five of six singles matches. Leading the way for the Panthers was freshman Espana-Perez, winning 6-0, 6-0 at #1 singles; Alahakoon winning at #2 singles 6-1, 6-3; Derry (pictured) winning at #4 singles 6-0, 6-1; Mariano taking her fifth singles court 6-0, 6-1; and freshman Kelsi Klein winning by default at sixth singles.
The Panthers (7-2, 5-2 GLIAC) return to action at 4 p.m. Thursday at another cross town rival in Otterbein University. The women are also home for two conference matches this weekend – at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2 against Northwood University and at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3 against Saginaw Valley State University.
