COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican women's tennis team returned home on Friday afternoon, welcoming Michigan Tech to Ohio Dominican for a GLIAC match against the Huskies. The Panthers rebounded after a rough start in doubles play to earn a hard fought 6-3 home win.
In doubles play, the Panthers continued to make progress but struggled to finish points, dropping 2-of-3 doubles courts. Sofia Espana-Perez (Fr./Mexico City, Mexico) and Aline Mariano (So./Sao Paulo, Brazil) lost a tough 8-6 decision on court one, while Ruchika Alahakoon (Sr./Colombo, Sri Lanka) and Nathalia Braga (So./Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; pictured) saw a 5-4 lead quickly turn to an 8-5 defeat. On court three, Mari Monaco (Jr./Port Clinton, OH) and Krista Derry (So./Baltimore, OH) secured a point with a come from behind 8-6 win.
In singles action, ODU performed at a high level, earning 5-of-6 singles points as they improved their GLIAC record to 3-1 on the season. Earning singles points for the Panthers was Espana-Perez on court one, 6-0, 6-2; Alahakoon on court two, 6-0, 6-3; and Kelsi Klein (Fr./Pickerington, OH) on court six, 6-1, 6-0. Sophomore Krista Derry (So./Baltimore, OH) and Mariano closed out the scoring for ODU with wins at #4 and #5 singles, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, and 6-1, 6-3, respectively.
ODU will return to action tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 11 as they welcome Lake Superior State University to Panther Courts for the first ever match-up between the two schools in tennis. The GLIAC match is set to begin at 10 a.m.
