COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican softball team hit the road on Tuesday afternoon for a non-conference twinbill versus the Bears of Shawnee State University. After twice downing Calumet College of St. Joseph's (IN) on Saturday in the Bethel College Invitational, the Panthers posted wins of 6-3 and 5-1 over the Bears extending their win streak to four games.
In game one, both teams were at a stalemate as neither could send across a run in the first two innings. ODU (21-18) erupted for six-run third inning behind six SSU errors to grab control of the game. The Bears (17-18) plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth, but could not overcome the fielding blunders as the Panthers posted the 6-3 victory.
Erica Sutter (Sr./Mansfield, OH; pictured) notched her seventh victory in the circle as she went the distance, allowing two earned runs on seven hits. Designated hitter Jamie Hazel (Sr./Pataskala, OH) drove in two RBI and scored a run in the win.
ODU carried over the momentum from game one sending a run across in the fourth inning and four more in the fifth for a 5-0 lead. SSU managed one run in the home half of the fifth, but would not get any closer, as the Panthers captured the sweep with a 5-1decision.
Starting pitcher Maria Staton (Jr./New Bremen, OH) improved her record to 12-6 as she allowed one earned run on five hits in the full seven innings of work.
Chelsea Archer (So./Thornville, OH) provided the offensive spark for ODU as she went 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI. Erin Sutter (So./Mansfield, OH) had two hits and a run scored in the nightcap.
ODU will continue their road swing as they travel to Tiffin, Ohio on Thursday afternoon for a non-conference doubleheader with future GLIAC foe Tiffin University. Game one between the Panthers and Dragons is set for 3 p.m.
