COLUMBUS, OH - After 23 days away from Panther Field, the Ohio Dominican softball team returned home following a long road trip, welcoming G-MAC opponent Kentucky Wesleyan College for a scheduled doubleheader.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, only one game was played in Columbus, where ODU defeated the Purple Panthers 10-2 in six innings. The second scheduled game resulted in a forfeit from KWC, giving ODU a 7-0 victory.Â
In the circle, freshman Alyvia Lawrentz earned her seventh win to move back to .500. She pitched six innings, allowing five hits, two runs, and recording four strikeouts. At the plate, the Panthers totaled nine hits and 10 runs, with Lilly Irvine and Erica Massey each collecting two hits. Four Panthers recorded two RBIs apiece: Halina Schulte, Reese Loveday, Irvine, and Massey. Loveday also hit a home run to end the game.
How It Happened
The Purple Panthers struck first with a two-run home run to take a 2-0 lead. ODU responded with a sacrifice fly from Lilly Irvine to get on the board. In the second inning, Halina Schulte gave ODU the lead with a double to right field that scored Erica Massey and Avery Mueller, who had both reached on bunt singles.
By the bottom of the third, ODU found its rhythm, adding three more runs on three hits. Evan Platfoot drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Erica Massey followed with a double to left field to bring in two more, making it 6-2. In the fourth, ODU added two more runs on a Lilly Irvine double that scored Addie Triplett, and a pinch-hit single from Gianna Solinger that brought Irvine home to extend the lead to 8-2.
To close out the game in six innings, freshman Reese Loveday hit a two-run home run to center field, securing the 10-2 run-rule victory.
