Box Score ALLENDALE, Mich. – Ohio Dominican's women's basketball team received a rude welcoming to the GLIAC Thursday evening as No. 14 Grand Valley State handed the Panthers a 74-50 setback at GVSU Fieldhouse.
Despite a poor shooting effort in the first, ODU trailed just six at halftime, but the size and athleticism of the Lakers allowed them to pull away in the second as they cruised to the home victory and improved to 5-0 on the year.
A back-and-forth affair was the theme of the first half as GVSU jumped out to an early 11-2 lead with just under 13 minutes remaining as the Panthers missed on their first five shot attempts, before a lay-up by Summer Hale (Sr./Galena, OH) got them on the board.
ODU cut the lead to 13-10 behind a pair of Katy Rasor (Jr./Grove City, OH) 3-pointers and two free throws by Hale, before a 15-5 run allowed the Lakers to take their largest lead of the half at 28-15 with 3:53 to play.
The Panthers swung the game back in their favor as they closed on an 8-1 run, fueled by Rasor's third three of the half and four Tracy Snider (Jr./Lancaster, OH) free throws to enter the break down 29-23.
Hale provided an offensive spark to start the second, scoring ODU's first seven points, but Briauna Taylor was not to be outdone as she rattled off nine of Grand Valley's first 11 points.
A 3-pointer Rasor cut the deficit to 37-33 at the 17:20 mark, but 12 unanswered Lakers points sparked a 28-5 run that put the game out of reach for the Panthers.
ODU held Alex Stelfox, the GLIAC scoring leader (17.3 ppg entering Thursday's game), to just four points, but Taylor more than made up for the deficit, finishing with game highs of 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Jessica Trambley added 14.
Hale, Rasor and Meredith Fox (Jr./Springboro, OH) all finished with 12 points for the Panthers, while Snider added seven, all coming from the charity stripe. After connecting on her first seven free throws, Snider missed on her last attempt, ending her school record of consecutive made free throws at 40.
ODU (1-3, 0-1 GLIAC) will look to rebound and grab their first conference win of the season on Saturday as they take on Ferris State (3-2) at 3 p.m. in Big Rapids to conclude their Michigan road trip.
