Box Score DETROIT, Mich. – A free throw by Melissa Hersey (Sr./West Chester, OH) brought Ohio Dominican's women's basketball team to within one point late against Wayne State, but several crucial Warrior baskets down the stretch sent the Panthers to their fifth straight road loss and fifth straight overall, 70-64.
After dropping their first six games, Wayne State has now won 2-of-3 to improve to 2-7 and 2-2 in the GLIAC, while ODU falls to 1-7 and 0-4 in conference play.
Despite trailing 43-32 at the 15:10 mark in the second half after an 11-0 run by WSU in just over a three minute span, ODU was able to trim the deficit to one on two occasions, the last at 53-52 with 6:57 left to play. However, back-to-back baskets by Deanna Crumpton and a trey by Felicia Thomas gave the Warriors a 62-54 cushion and control of the game with 4:22 remaining as the Panthers could get no closer than three points the rest of the way.
The Panthers struggled in the early going for the second straight game, hitting just four of their first 19 field goal attempts, allowing Wayne State to run their lead to 22-9, their largest of the first half, with 6:14 remaining.
A 9-0 run over a 1:30 stretch, sandwiched by two Tracy Snider (Jr./Lancaster, OH) 3-pointers brought ODU to within four, 22-18. After an 8-3 Warrior run stretched the lead back to nine, the Panthers were able to close to 30-27 at halftime, as they finished the half on 6-of-10 shooting.
Abby Glover (Jr./Centerville, OH) paced the Panthers with a season-high 13 points. Meredith Fox (Jr./Springboro, OH) hit double-figures for the third game in a row with 12 while grabbing a career high nine boards and Snider chipped in with 11.
Tyler Hardy led all scorers with 22 of Wayne State's 41 bench points, while Crumpton finished with 10, eight coming in the second half for the Warriors.
The Panthers will play their final GLIAC game of the 2010 calendar year this Saturday at 3 p.m. as they take on Findlay at Croy Gymnasium in Findlay, Ohio. It will be the first meeting between the teams since the 1996-97 campaign when Findlay was victorious by a score of 62-61.
