Box Score INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Looking to pick up their first win of the season and the program's first against a NCAA Division I team, the Ohio Dominican women's basketball team squared off against Butler on Saturday evening at Hinkle Fieldhouse, but were no match for the Bulldogs, falling 69-50.
Hoping for some of the same magic experienced by the Milan Indians' high school state championship run in 1954 that inspired the movie "Hoosiers," the Panthers struggled out of the gates as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 9-0 lead just over four minutes into the game, scoring on four of their first five possessions.
Butler stretched the lead to 15 before a Tracy Snider (Jr./Lancaster, OH) 3-pointer got the Panthers on the board at the 13:40 mark. The basket ignited a 14-6 ODU run that trimmed the deficit to 21-14 with under eight to play in the first.
Several ODU giveaways down the stretch allowed the Bulldogs to go on 12-4 spurt and match their largest lead of the half at 15, but a three by Snider just before intermission sent the Panthers into the break down 33-21.
A second 12-4 run to start the second, fueled by two 3-pointers, one of the old-fashioned sorts, allowed Butler to run the lead to 45-25 with 15:42 remaining.
ODU cut the deficit to 16 on a couple occasions, but the turnover disparity and 15 Butler offensive rebounds were too much to overcome. The Panthers gave the ball away only eight times in the second, but the damage was done as the Bulldogs capitalized with 34 points off ODU's 28 total turnovers.
Snider finished with a team-high 13 points, all coming in the first half, on 4-of-6 shooting, including 2-of-3 from behind the arc. Summer Hale (Sr./Galena, OH) posted her second straight game in double figures with 10 points, while Shelley Warren (Jr./Solon, OH) added six and Meredith Fox (Jr./Springboro, OH) finished with five.
Chloe Hamilton led three Bulldogs in double figures with 14 points, while Preseason Second Team All-Horizon League selection Brittany Bowen added 12 and Sarah Hamm had 10.
The Panthers (0-2) make their home debut at 6 p.m. next Tuesday, Nov. 23 against former AMC rival Cedarville (2-2) in Alumni Hall. The Yellow Jackets enter the game as the NAIA preseason No. 7 after finishing 27-6 a year ago.
