Kentucky Wesleyan Wins Battle of the Panther Series in Kentucky

OWENSBORO, Ky. - The Ohio Dominican Panthers (18-24, 13-15 G-MAC) baseball team went on the road to take on the Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers (26-20, 16-12 G-MAC).

In a battle of ferocious felines, Kentucky Wesleyan got wins in three of four games as the season shifts to the final eight games. KWC got the Thursday (April 23) sweep with routs of 16-3 and 14-2 before the teams split Friday (April 24). ODU dropped the first game 11-9 and came back for a nightcap win of 9-3.

Game 1 (Thursday - L, 16-3 in 7 innings)
  • Ohio Dominican started off hot with a run scored in the first inning, taking an early 1-0 lead. Grant Horne walked and got to third base on a failed pickoff by the pitcher. Steven Chapman doubled home Horne with a two-bagger down the left field line.
  • Kentucky Wesleyan took the lead with a three-run home run in the third inning and followed it up with a solo shot in the fourth for a 4-1 lead.
  • Gavin Lawler returned the favor in the fifth inning with a two-out, solo blast to right center field. Horne and Chapman combined for another run, courtesy of a Chapman RBI double after a Horne single. The lead was trimmed to 4-3.
  • The purple Panthers broke the game open with nine runs in the fifth inning and added three more in the sixth for a 16-3 run-rule win in seven innings.
  • Chapman went two-for-two with two RBI doubles in the game as the top three hitters in the lineup (Lawler, Horne and Chapman) had four hits, three runs, two walks and all three RBI.
  • Landon Ringhiser (L, 4-4) allowed ten runs in four innings with Eric Geddes allowing six runs in 1.2 innings. Aidan Piatt closed the game with the final out.
Game 2 (Thursday - L, 7-5 in 7 innings)
  • KWC used one run in the first inning and seven runs in the second inning, leading 8-0 after two frames.
  • In the third inning, ODU got on the board. Noah Schacht doubled as the leadoff batter and moved to third base on a wild pitch. Will Schirmer grounded out to short, scoring Schacht.
  • Three more KWC runs scored between the fourth and fifth innings as the Panthers led 12-1.
  • Just like the third inning, ODU manufactured a run in the sixth inning with similar luck. Lawler doubled on the fourth pitch of the frame and got to third base on a fly out by Horne. Chapman plated Lawler with a RBI groundout to second base.
  • KWC closed the scoring with two final runs in the sixth inning, winning 14-2.
  • Both hits for ODU were doubles from Schacht and Lawler. Lawler walked twice of the four walks that ODU took in the game.
  • Jaxson Stried (L, 0-5) took the loss with eight runs (three earned) allowed on four hits in 1.2 innings. Jack Knight gave up one run in two innings. • Ohio Dominican rallied with a five-run fourth inning to lead 5-3, scoring all runs with two outs. Braden Reed and Schacht walked with Mason Hess loading the bases with a single. Lawler came off the bench and lined a two-run single through the left side of the infield. Garrett Roach had a pinch-hit appearance while Schirmer ran for Lawler. Roach singled home Hess to tie the game at three. Carson Willis drove home a run with a RBI single to score Schirmer and Horne doubled home Roach, capping the five-spot for the Black and Gold.
  • Kentucky Wesleyan tied the game at five in the fourth inning and scored three runs in the fifth for an 8-5 lead.
  • Willis got ODU back within one as he blasted a two-run homer to right field, scoring Schirmer who doubled in the sixth inning.
  • KWC answered with three runs in their half of the sixth, pushing the lead to 11-7 but ODU had one more rally try.
  • Chapman started the seventh with a solo shot to left field. Reed doubled as the next batter to get the tying run on deck. After a ground out, Schacht came through with a RBI double as the score was 11-9. Schirmer walked with two outs and a wild pitch got the tying run to second base. The final batter, Sawyer Hamsher struck out as KWC secured a series win with an 11-9 win in game three.
  • Willis had two hits in three at-bats with a home run and three RBI. Nine different players had a hit, including two from pinch-hitters and one from a pinch-runner/defensive replacement. Tryce Chaffin walked once and stole two bases before coming out of the game.

  • KWC used a solo home run in the fifth inning to get within 6-2.
  • Three hits led to another ODU run in the sixth inning. Sam Battles doubled and Chaffin singled to put runners on the corners. Schirmer singled home Battles for a 7-2 lead.
  • Another ODU wild pitch scored a run for the purple guys in the seventh before a 54 minute rain delay ensued.
  • Play resumed with an ODU 7-3 lead and the Black and Gold added on in the eighth inning. The Panthers loaded the bases with two hit batters and a single with only one out. Chapman singled home a run before a wild pitch made it 9-3.
  • ODU had 14 hits in the game with three hits and four RBI from Chapman. Reed, Chaffin and Schirmer all had two hits apiece. Eight of the nine starters had at least one hit. Lawler and Chaffin were aboard three times with Lawler scoring three runs and Chaffin scoring twice.
