ODU Starts Home Schedule with IUP Series Win

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio Dominican Panthers (3-7) baseball team kicked off a nine-game homestand last weekend with a four-game series with the Indiana (Pa.) Crimson Hawks (4-6) at Frank Damian Field at Panther Valley.

The Panthers offense came alive with three big games, fueling a series win. Ohio Dominican swept Sunday (March 8) with a pair of wins, 9-6 and 16-1. Monday's (March 9) twinbill was split with ODU taking the opener 10-6 while IUP avoided the sweep with a 3-1 win.

Game 1 (Sunday - W, 9-6)
  • Ohio Dominican started with a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a RBI double by Carson Willis, scoring Sam Battles who singled.
  • A five-run fourth inning put the Crimson Hawks up 5-1 before seven Panther runs in the next two innings flipped the script. After a Tryce Chaffin single, Steven Chapman started the rally with a two-run homer to left center field. ODU trailed 5-3 after five innings.
  • One inning later, a big blast put the Panthers on top. Two walks and a single loaded the bases with two outs in the inning. A bases loaded walk by Chaffin trimmed the lead to 5-4 and Chapman followed with a grand slam to left field for an 8-5 lead.
  • An error in the eighth inning led to the final run for ODU while IUP closed out the scoring in the ninth with a run. The Panthers got their first win of the season, 9-6.
  • The top three Panthers in the order (Chaffin, Chapman and Battles) had two hits each, combining for seven RBI and six runs scored. Chapman plated six runs with his two home runs while Chaffin scored three runs.
  • Jaxson Stried started and allowed five runs in 3.2 innings with five strikeouts. Bryson Shumate (1.2 IP) and Andrew Holcomb (0.2 IP) combined for 2.1 innings of scoreless ball. Jared Hoersten (W, 1-0) got the win with one run given up in three innings of work.
Game 2 (Sunday - W, 16-1 in 7 innings)
  • Three big innings got the Panthers rolling for their second win of the day.
  • Seven runs in the second inning was more than enough for the Panthers. Tristan Schuerman and Will Schirmer walked in runs with the bases loaded. Chaffin singled home a pair of runs with Gavin Lawler adding a two-run double. A wild pitch capped the scoring as the lead was 7-0.
  • Two errors and three hits led to four runs in the fourth frame. Lawler drilled a solo home run to left field and Schirmer singled home a run. Two errors accounted for the other two runs in the inning as ODU led 11-0.
  • The fifth inning saw ten men to the plate with five runs scoring. Lawler added his third hit of the game on a RBI double and scoring on an error. Mason Kurtz, Schirmer and Chaffin all notched RBI singles.
  • IUP scratched a run across in the sixth inning, breaking the shutout bid.
  • Lawler and Schirmer both had three hits in the game, combining for seven RBI. Lawler tallied three extra-base hits with Schirmer driving in three runs. Chaffin followed with a two-hit game in the leadoff spot with three RBI.
  • Chapman (W, 1-2) scattered eight strikeouts and one unearned run over six innings for his first win of the season. Joey Helms closed the game with a scoreless seventh inning.
Game 3 (Monday - W, 10-6 in 7 innings)
  • Like Sunday's nightcap, there were crooked numbers on the scoreboard on ODU's scoreline. Four different innings had multiple run innings in the game.
  • Indiana (Pa.) opened with a two-spot in the first inning but the lead was short-lived. Ohio Dominican used five singles to score three times. Grant Horne put the Panthers ahead 3-2 with a two-run single after Battles got the scoring started with a RBI single.
  • The Crimson Hawks took the lead back in the 3rd inning with a two-run home run to left field. Just like the first inning, the Panthers answered immediately. With two outs, the Panthers got three runs to score as they got the 6-4 lead back. A single, error and walk loaded the bases. Lawler lined a two-run single and Battles sent a RBI single to right field. ODU led 6-4 in the fourth.
  • Schirmer doubled home a run with Chaffin coming through with a RBI single in the fifth inning, leading 8-4.
  • Two runs crossed the plate for the Crimson Hawks as they made it a game in the sixth frame. The visitors pulled within 8-6 and left the bases loaded in the inning.
  • Insurance runs came in the sixth inning, helping the Panthers to their third straight win. Two hit batters and a single loaded the bases with no outs. Kurtz grounded out and a wild pitch completed the scoring for a 10-6 win.
  • Battles went four-of-four with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Lawler and Schirmer had two hit contests.
  • Landon Ringhiser (W, 1-1) gave up four runs in five innings of work with four strikeouts. Jack Knight allowed two runs (one earned) in 0.2 innings. Willis closed the game with a 1.1 innings of scoreless relief for his first career save.
Game 4 (Monday - W, 3-1)
  • The series finale was a pitcher's duel with only four runs scoring.
  • IUP scored a single run in the first two innings for a 2-0 lead.
  • Lawler continued his busy weekend with a RBI triple to right center field, cutting the lead to 2-1 in the third inning.
  • The Hawks got a run back in the sixth inning, taking a 2-1 lead into the second half of the game.
  • In the ninth inning, ODU got the winning run to the plate with two outs. Garrett Roach nearly lifted the Panthers to a series sweep with a fly ball to the edge of the warning track in left center field. His out just missed a home run by mere feet as the Crimson Hawks avoided the sweep, 3-1.
  • Lawler had three hits on the day, sitting a home run shy of the cycle.
  • Colin Hennessey (L, 0-1) took the loss despite three runs allowed in five and a third innings. He fanned five batters with only two hits given up. Nick Cody (1.1 IP) and Jeremy Ramirez (2.1 IP) kept the Hawks off the scoreboard over the final 3.2 innings with three strikeouts (all Ramirez's).
Ohio Dominican ends non-conference play for now with a single game against West Liberty on Tuesday (March 10) at 2:00 PM.
