DAVENPORT, Fla. - The Ohio Dominican Panthers (6-9) baseball team closed out the Florida trip with a pair of high-scoring affairs.
Ohio Dominican routed the Bloomfield College Bears (0-9) 15-3 in a long Monday (March 10) affair before dropping a 12-11 contest to Wayne State College Wildcats (5-8) on Tuesday (March 11).
Monday (W, 15-3 vs. Bloomfield - 7 innings)
- After coming up empty in the first inning, Ohio Dominican broke the 0-0 tie in the second inning. Drew Emerson opened the inning with a weird play to end up on third base. Emerson walked and a wild pitch allowed Emerson to get to second base. While rounding second base, Bloomfield's pitcher threw the ball past the base, getting Emerson to third base. CJ Dean plated Emerson with a sacrifice fly to center field. A double, hit by pitch and single loaded the bases but the lead remained 1-0.
- Two more runs in the third inning pushed the Panthers lead to 3-0. Jacob Adams walked and stole second before Emerson singled him home. Dean followed with a RBI double down the left field line.
- Two runs scored for the Bears in the third inning on a home run and RBI single as they trimmed the lead to 3-2.
- The Panthers got the two runs back in the fourth inning for a 5-2 lead. Peter Jelenic walked and Adams was hit by a pitch with two outs. Gianni Passarelli singled home Jelenic and Emerson doubled home Adams.
- In the bottom of the fourth, the game was delayed for nearly seven hours due to weather. The game resumed after a long delay with a Sam Battles home run in the fifth inning for a 6-2 lead for ODU.
- The seventh inning was a nine-run inning with only two hits for Ohio Dominican. Five walks, two hit batters and three wild pitches led to runs, including a grand slam by Jordan Daniels.
- Two runs scored on wild pitches while Braden Reed and Battles walked with the bases loaded. Passarelli had the second hit of the frame, a RBI infield single.
- One final Bloomfield run in the seventh inning made the final score 15-3 as the run rule was in effect.
- Daniels, Passarelli, Emerson and Dean all had two hits in the game with Reed and Battles rounding out the players with a hit.
- Five different Panthers drove in multiple runs and also scored at least two runs. Emerson scored three runs with two RBI.
- Six Panthers were hit by pitches as well.
- Trayce Mercer started and allowed one run in 2.1 innings with five strikeouts. Jaxson Stried gave up one run as he pitched before the rain delay. Garrett Roach got the win (1-0) as he tallied three innings of one-run ball with three strikeouts and six strikeouts. Matthew Bame made his pitching debut and retired the final batter of the game with a strikeout.
Tuesday (L, 12-11 vs. Wayne State (Neb.))
- ODU drew first in the runs column with two runs in the third inning. Daniels walked with back-to-back extra base hits following him. Jelenic doubled and Adams tripled for a 2-0 lead.
- The Wildcats scored three runs in the third and single runs in both the fourth and fifth innings for a 5-2 lead over the Panthers.
- Four runs for ODU gave the Panthers a 6-5 lead in the sixth inning. Dean started the rally with a solo home run to right field. Emerson was hit by a pitch, Noah Schacht singled and Jake Scherette walked to load the bases. A wild pitch got one run home before an RBI single from Mason Kurtz to tie the game at five. A double steal by Kurtz and Scherette put the Panthers in front 6-5.
- Seven runs in the seventh inning erased the Panthers lead and put the Wildcats ahead 12-6.
- Four runs scored in the eighth inning to close the gap for the Panthers. ODU got a base runner with a lead-off walk and a fielder's choice. Three wild pitches and a single got a run home and a man on third base. A walk and hit batter loaded the bases. Jelenic singled home two and Adams added a RBI single of his onw as the lead shrunk to 12-10.
- In the ninth, a single and an error allowed ODU to score on a fielder's choice from Scherette. With the tying run on base, the Wildcats closed the game with a 12-11 final.
- Seven players notched a hit with Jelenic and Adams with two hits. Eight players scored runs with three players at two runs each.
- Chris Bartholomew made the start with three runs allowed in 2.2 innings. Six pitchers followed Bartholomew on the mound with Jared Hoersten and Gavin Mangus tallying scoreless innings.
The Panthers return home to Columbus and will open conference play at Tiffin this weekend. Further details will be announced for the slate on Wednesday.
