COLUMBUS, Ohio -Â The Ohio Dominican women's basketball team hosted the Walsh Cavaliers for a late-season clash at Alumni Hall. The Panthers had previously faced Walsh in Canton in December and suffered an 88-80 defeat.
This time, Ohio Dominican dominated, securing a 91-77 victory.
Sarah Ochs led the Panthers with a season-high 26 points, shooting 7-11 from the field, 2-2 from three-point range, and 10-11 from the free-throw line in 38 minutes of action.
Gabby Stare contributed 25 points, three rebounds, and impressive shooting stats, hitting 7-12 from the field and 11-14 from the free-throw line.
Brynn Mullet added 13 points to the Panthers' efforts.
First Half Notes
The game began with the Panthers on fire, shooting 55.6% from the field, making 10 of 18 attempts. Walsh started slower, shooting just 42.9% from the field, hitting 6 of 14. While Walsh struggled from beyond the arc, Ohio Dominican sank 1 of their 3 attempts. The Panthers dominated the first quarter, scoring 25 points while limiting Walsh to just 12, building a substantial lead.
In the second quarter, Ohio Dominican's momentum slowed a bit, shooting 40% from the field but hitting 2 of 4 three-pointers. Walsh made a push, hitting 4 of 5 three-point attempts and capitalizing on strong points in the paint. The Cavs also stepped up at the free-throw line, hitting 5-6, compared to ODU's 7-8. Walsh outscored Ohio Dominican 23-17 in the second period, closing the gap to 42-35 at halftime.
At the break, Gabby Stare had 12 points, Brynn Mullet had 8, while Sarah Ochs and Logan Pride had 6 points each. Ohio Dominican capitalized on 16 points from Walsh's turnovers and outscored them 20-16 in the paint.
Second Half Notes
After halftime, Walsh's shooting cooled off to 42.1% from the field and 33.3% from three-point range. Ohio Dominican, on the other hand, shot 54.6% from the field and made 3 of 5 three-pointers. ODU won the third quarter 23-19, extending their lead to 65-54.
In the fourth quarter, Ohio Dominican's shooting exploded. They made 8 of 10 field goals (80%) and hit 2 of 3 three-pointers (66.7%), while also sinking 8 of 11 free throws. Walsh shot 64.3% from the field, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Panthers' strong finish, as ODU outscored them 26-23.
With two minutes left, Senior Gabby Stare stepped to the free-throw line and etched her name in history, surpassing 2,091 points held by alum Jim Underwood. With her 25-point performance in the game, she became the all-time leading scorer in Ohio Dominican basketball history with 2,093 points.
Ohio Dominican finished the game shooting 57.1% from the field, making 28 of 49 shots. They also hit 8 of 15 three-pointers (53.3%) and converted 77.1% of their free throws. With this victory, ODU improves to a record of 11-13 overall and 6-10 in the G-MAC. With only four games remaining, Ohio Dominican aims to secure a spot in the conference tournament. Next Thursday, they will return to Alumni Hall for a 5:30 PM game against Thomas More.
