Football Takes Season Opener Over Seton Hill, 21-14

GREENSBURG, Pa. - The Ohio Dominican Panthers (1-0) football team kicked off the 2024 season on the road with a matchup against the PSAC member, the Seton Hill Griffins (0-2). 

Ohio Dominican jumped out to a 21-0 lead and hung on with a late stop to defeat the Griffins 21-14 on Opening Night at Offutt Field. 

BOX SCORE NOTES

  • Drew Gallehue finished with a career-high 262 yards passing on 19-of-27 attempts. The junior threw for three touchdowns and did not throw an interception. 
  • Shane Lindstrom made his debut in the Panthers backfield, tallying 39 yards on 15 attempts rushing. 
  • Nathan Webster had 35 yards rushing for his 11 carries in his collegiate debut.
  • Jayden Cornell caught five passes for 120 yards total and two touchdowns. His 120 yards receiving were a career-best. 
  • Dimitri Mitsopoulos finished with four catches and 72 yards with a 60-yard touchdown catch just before halftime. 
  • Michael Powers led all defenders with nine tackles, including seven solo stops. The linebacker forced his first fumble of his career in the game. 
  • Kendal Marshall made six tackles but led the Panthers with 2.5 sacks on the night. 
  • Bryce Washington and Jace Schaefer both added a sack of their own - the first sacks of their careers. 
  • Gavin Linkous accounted for two tackles for loss and half of a sack. 
  • Daishaun Hill made his eighth interception of his career, moving him into eighth all-time at ODU. 
  • Ohio Dominican outgained Seton Hill 320-261 overall, despite the Griffins winning the rushing battle 113-58. The Panthers had the passing advantage 262-148. 
  • The Panthers possessed the ball for 33:40 and went seven-of-15 on third downs. 
  • ODU managed five sacks as a team and eight tackles for loss. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Seton Hill could not convert on a short field after a muffed punt in the first quarter, missing on a 36-yard field goal six minutes into the game. 
  • The first quarter remained scoreless until Ohio Dominican capitalized on a Seton Hill muffed punt in the second quarter. 
  • Gabe Pence pounced on a loose ball off of a punt, putting the Panthers on a short field with 11:16 left before halftime. Gallehue connected with Cornell for a 20-yard throw before the two scored on a 3-yard toss to the right side of the end zone. Ohio Dominican led 7-0 with 9:53 left in the first half. 
  • The Panthers defense stopped the Griffins on fourth down late in the second quarter. The next play saw Gallehue go deep to Mitsopoulos for a 60-yard score with just 12 seconds on the clock. 
  • Hill picked off the Griffins quarterback Jake Cruz to close the first half as ODU led 14-0. 
  • Midway through the third quarter, Gallehue found a wide-open Cornell for an 85-yard touchdown pass - the sixth longest strike in program history. The Panthers added on and held a 21-0 lead with 8:51 to go in the third. 
  • After an ODU bad snap on a punt, Seton Hill scored on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Cruz to Ethan Fame. The Panther lead was cut to 21-7 with four seconds left in the third quarter.
  • The home team rallied, scoring on a 1-yard touchdown from Ky'Ron Craggette in the final two minutes. The Griffins trailed 21-14 and put the trust in the defense to stop ODU one more time. 
  • Webster capped the night with a key first down to activate victory formation. ODU won 21-14.

  • Ohio Dominican will travel to Winston-Salem, North Carolina next week for a matchup with the Winston-Salem State Rams on Saturday (Sept. 14).
