Panthers Fall Short in Road Overtime Battle, 19-13

WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina - The Ohio Dominican Panthers (1-1) football team continued the opening road swing for the 2024 season with a road contest in the historic Bowman Gray Stadium on Saturday (Sept. 14) night.  

The Panthers rallied from a 10-0 deficit, falling to the Winston-Salem State Rams (2-1) in overtime by a score of 19-13. 

BOX SCORE NOTES

  • Drew Gallehue reset his career-high in passing yards with 274 through the air on 33-of-50 passing. He tossed one touchdown and was picked off three times. 
    • Gallehue became the first Panther since 2008 to throw the ball 50 times in a game (Cris Reisert vs. Saint Francis, 10/4/2008).
  • Shane Lindstrom rushed for 35 yards on eight attempts. Nathan Webster added 21 yards on nine carries on the ground. 
  • Dimitri Mitsopoulos caught 11 passes for a career-high 108 yards, becoming the 11th Panther to catch 11 passes in a game (tied for 10th all-time).
  • Jayden Cornell followed up his career-best in Week 1 with 87 yards on eight catches in the second game. Cornell caught his third touchdown of the season. 
  • Antonio Johnson and Lindstrom each brought in six catches. 
  • Brayden Taylor had a team-high nine tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss. 
  • Gavin Linkous and Charles Tart each made eight tackles on defense.  
  • Dylan Fisher picked off a pass in the second quarter. 
  • Ohio Dominican outgained Winston-Salem State 317-285 overall. 
  • Both teams had 19 first downs in the game. 
  • Despite only having the ball for 3:14 of the first quarter, the Panthers possessed the ball for 31:06 of the game. ODU went eight-of-15 on third downs and converted all three fourth down attempts.  

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Winston-Salem State started the scoring with a touchdown on their first drive. Daylin Lee completed an eight-yard touchdown pass to Kaleb Washington as the Rams led 7-0 with 10:31 to go in the first quarter. That remained the score until the second quarter. 
  • On the first full drive of the second quarter, Fisher picked off a Lee pass to give the Panthers the ball back. 
  • The next play saw Justin Fleming intercept a Gallehue pass, leading to a 23 yard field goal by Gilbert Lorenzana with 4:32 left before halftime and the Rams had a 10-0 lead. 
  • ODU had a chance to score before halftime but the AJ Young field goal attempt at the buzzer was blocked. The home team led 10-0 at the intermission. 
  • The Panthers took the ball after the second half kickoff with a 39-yard kickoff return by Mitsopoulos, scoring on an 11-play, 60-yard drive later on. Gallehue found Cornell in the end zone from 13-yards out, cutting the lead to 10-7 with 10:36 left in the third. 
  • Five minutes later, Lorenzana kicked a 19-yard field goal for WSSU as they pushed the lead to 13-7. 
  • To answer, Ohio Dominican ate 10:09 of clock between the third and fourth quarters. A 17-play, 74-yard drive led to points to get the game tied. After Webster converted a fourth and one inside the red zone, Gallehue lowered his head on a fourth and goal at the one and scored on a QB sneak. The extra point was blocked, leaving the game tied with 10:32 left. 
  • Both defenses stood tall for a few drives until the Panthers made one last push for the regulation win. 
  • Ohio Dominican went on another 17-play, 74-yard drive into the redzone in the closing seconds. Gallehue and Mitsopoulos connected on a 12-yard on fourth down to keep the drive alive. The Panthers went for the win but Young's game-winning kick was missed. 
  • For the first time since October 16, 2021, Ohio Dominican entered an overtime game. 
  • ODU had the ball first but the Rams intercepted Gallehue on third down. Eight plays later, Trevon Hester clinched the 19-13 win for Winston-Salem State. 

UP NEXT

  • Ohio Dominican opens conference play with the home opener against Thomas More on Saturday (Sept. 21). Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM on Sunbury Road.
