ODU Highlights Seniors With Three Wins Over Trevecca Nazarene

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio Dominican Panthers (27-21, 18-14 G-MAC) baseball team closed out the regular season with a home series against the Trevecca Nazarene Trojans (28-21, 20-12 G-MAC).

Ohio Dominican took three of four games, including a Thursday (May 2) sweep and a split on Friday (May 3). With the first win on Senior Day, head coach Christopher Antonides won his 200th career game as head coach at ODU.

Game 1 (W, 4-3)
  • Ohio Dominican snapped the scoreless tie in the fourth inning with two runs scored on three hits. Lane Marshall (Wooster, Ohio) singled with one out in the inning. Jack Mathey (Copley, Ohio) followed with a single to left field. The left fielder allowed the ball to go past, bringing Marshall home and getting Mathey all the way to third. CJ Dean (Columbus, Ohio) scored Mathey with a sacrifice fly as ODU led 2-0.
  • Trevecca Nazarene cut the lead in half with a run in the fifth inning.
  • The Panthers responded with a run in the sixth inning on a Mathey RBI double, scoring Marshall after a single.
  • Two runs in the eighth inning for the Trojans knotted the game at three runs each.
  • Dean led off the ninth inning with a double and Spencer Tammaro (New Albany, Ohio) ended the game with a walk-off RBI single against a drawn in infield. Ohio Dominican won 4-3 in the series opener.
  • Marshall, Mathey and Tammaro all gained two hits as the Panthers had eight hits as a unit.
  • Michael Lesiecki (Uhrichsville, Ohio) scattered three runs on five hits in seven innings of work. He tied a career-high with eight strikeouts. Max Whitesell (Dayton, Ohio) was scoreless in two innings of relief, fanning two and picking up his fifth win of the year.
Game 2 (W, 5-0)
  • One early run in their first at-bats pushed the Panthers to a 1-0 lead. Marshall singled, stole second and scored on a RBI double by Dean.
  • One big inning in the fifth inning for ODU blew the game open with four hits. With two outs, Brennen Hunt (Ashland, Ohio) singled and Marshall was hit by a pitch. A Mathey RBI knock saw Hunt come home. Marshall scored on a RBI single from Dean while a throwing error to the plate moved both runners into scoring position. Tammaro cleaned up the runners with a two-run double to right field. The lead grew to 5-0 after five innings for the Panthers.
  • Derek Bolander (Oregon, Ohio) only needed one run as he tossed a complete game shutout with four hits allowed (all singles). The senior fanned a career-high nine batters in his outing.
  • Dean accounted for three hits on his own with two singles and a double. Batters one through seven in the lineup all had a hit.
Game 3 (W, 8-5)
  • Four Panther runs in the second inning gave ODU their first lead of the Senior Day contest. Tammaro kicked off the inning with a hit by pitch. Jake Scherette (Brunswick, Ohio) lined a RBI double into the right field corner, plating Tammaro. A fielding error at first base allowed Scherette to score the second run. After a walk, Marshall added two runs with a double down the right field line.
  • Trevecca trimmed the lead to 4-3 with two runs in the third and one in the fourth inning.
  • With two runners on, Dean cleared the bases on a two-run double to left field. The Panthers pushed the lead back to 6-3 in the fourth.
  • One inning later, Peter Jelenic (Medina, Ohio) added the fifth double of the game for ODU. His two-run knock ballooned the lead to 8-3.
  • The Trojans got the lead down to three runs in the sixth inning after a two-run blast but the Panthers held on 8-5.
  • Seven of the nine starters counted into the hit column with nine hits overall. Jelenic and Scherette doubled up with two hits each, while both scoring twice. Five of the Panthers hits were doubles - tying a season-high.
  • Chase Hunt (Ashland, Ohio) improved to 2-2 on the season with five and one third strong innings. He allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits. He struck out three batters. Steven Chapman (Dayton, Ohio) shutout the Trojans in the final 1.2 innings, fanning three Trojans in a scoreless outing for his second save.
Game 4 (L, 14-5)
  • For the fourth time in the series, ODU broke the scoring tie with a three-run first inning with only two hits. Two singles and a hit batter loaded the bases with no outs in the frame. A balk and passed ball plated two runs. Two batters later, Michael McFadden (Brunswick, Ohio) capped the inning with a sacrifice fly.
  • The Trojans scored four runs in the next three innings, taking a 4-3 lead.
  • A wild sixth inning for the Panthers put them on top for the time being. Two walks by Austin Evans (Kings Mills, Ohio) and Michael Knapp (Elyria, Ohio) forced a Trevecca pitching change. An error by the catcher trying to catch Knapp at second scored the first run as Evans moved to third on an error by the center fielder on the return throw. Jelenic tripled home Evans for a 5-4 lead.
  • Ten Trojan runs in the eighth and ninth innings helped Trevecca avoid the sweep, 14-5.
  • Mathey had three hits, his third game of three hits on the year. Jelenic grabbed his 12th game of two hits.
  • Andrew Deyhle (Cincinnati, Ohio) started the game with two runs allowed. Jared Hoersten (Oregon, Ohio) threw two scoreless innings in relief along with Chris Bartholomew (Centerville, Ohio) throwing one scoreless frame.
The Panthers have qualified for the 2024 Great Midwest Baseball Tournament next week. When the bracket is released, details will be available on our website. Play begins on Wednesday (May 8) at Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio.
