Softball Survived Northwood But Were Stopped By Grand Valley State

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – On day two of the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional, the Ohio Dominican softball team started the day taking on #7 Northwood before ending it with #6 Grand Valley State. The Panthers won game one, 3-0, and lost game two, 4-1.

Leading the way for the day was Gracie Jo Thompson (Ashville, Ohio) going 3-5 from the plate. The senior had a double as well. Following her was Lilly Irvine (Delaware, Ohio) and Alli Madden (Cincinnati, Ohio) with two hits each. Madden added a double and scored a run.

In the circle, Addison Smodilla (Terre Haute, Ind.) started the first game and picked up the win to improve to 14-4 on the season. She appeared in the second game, going a total of 10.0 innings and collecting four strikeouts. Grace Hammer (Uniontown, Ohio) appeared in the second game, collecting her eighth save of the season.

Game One
The Black and Gold got things started in the bottom of the first inning after a double from Madden. The senior advanced to third on a passed ball and later scored off a sacrifice bunt from Alexis Stevens (Marion, Ohio). In the bottom of the third, Thompson snagged her first hit of the game with a single through the left side.

The Timberwolves got two baserunners off two hits but left them stranded on the bases. In the bottom of the frame, the Panthers extended their lead to 3-0. Lindsey Potter (Plain City, Ohio) walked and advanced to second after an Emily Holland (Mineral Ridge, Ohio) single. A double steal pushed them both into scoring position just in time for a wild pitch, allowing one to score. Kendrick Sterling (Crothersville, Ind.) snagged an RBI to make it 3-0.

Thompson doubled in the bottom of the fifth while Irvine singled in the bottom of the sixth. Northwood had no answer, allowing ODU to advance to the 4:00 PM CT game.

Game Two
The Lakers opened with three consecutive hits, including two doubles, to take a 2-0 lead in the first inning. In the bottom of the frame, Kaleigh Golden (Thornville, Ohio) singled, along with Stevens, but both were left on base.

In the top of the second, GVSU plated another off two hits to take a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the third, Thompson snagged another hit and advanced to second thanks to a Madden single. An inning later, their deficit grew to four after Grand Valley tabbed three hits.

Emily Walker (Plain City, Ohio) singled in the bottom of the fourth. Two innings later, Irvine singled up the middle. Anna Darrah (Canton, Ohio) came in to pinch run and later scored thanks to back-to-back walks and a Holland ground out RBI, making it 4-1. The Black and Gold had no more rallies left, falling 4-1.

Ohio Dominican ended the season with a 35-15 record.
