ASHLAND, Ohio - In a series that was relocated due to field conditions in Panther Valley, the Ohio Dominican Panthers (14-12, 5-5 G-MAC) baseball team took on the #9 ranked Ashland Eagles (22-3, 9-1 G-MAC) on Wednesday (April 3).
Ohio Dominican was the home team in the doubleheader against the Eagles but the games were played at Tomassi Stadium and Donges Field at the Archer Ballpark Complex. The Eagles took both ends of the twin bill, winning 17-6 and 14-2.
Game 1 (L, 17-6 in 7 innings)
Ashland scored the first ten runs of the game with six runs in the first inning and four in the second inning. Ohio Dominican battled back with a three-spot in the bottom of the second.
Drew Emerson (Germantown, Ohio) was plunked by a pitch with
Spencer Tammaro (New Albany, Ohio) following with a single.
CJ Dean (Columbus, Ohio) doubled home both runs. Two batters later,
Michael McFadden (Brunswick, Ohio) plated Dean with a sacrifice fly.
In the fourth inning,
Lane Marshall (Wooster, Ohio) singled in a run as the lead was trimmed to 10-4. The fifth inning featured a pair of sacrifice flies. After Ashland scored one in the top of the inning, McFadden came through with the bases loaded. His second sacrifice fly of the game had ODU down 11-5.
Ashland added six runs in the seventh inning for a 17-5 lead.
Jake Scherette (Brunswick, Ohio) ended the scoring for the Panthers with a RBI single in the seventh inning. The game finished with a 17-6 score after seven innings.
Dean went three-for-three with two singles and a double.
Brennen Hunt (Ashland, Ohio) and Tammaro had two hits each. Dean and McFadden combined for four RBI in the opener. Tammaro scored three runs on his own.
Game 2 (L, 14-2 in 7 innings)
Two big innings put the Eagles in front in the nightcap with three runs in the third and six more in the sixth inning.
Peter Jelenic (Medina, Ohio) singled in the sixth inning and moved on a wild pitch. Hunt singled home Jelenic to get Ohio Dominican on the board, 9-1.
With five more runs in the seventh, Ashland pushed the advantage to 14-1. ODU loaded the bases with
Gianni Passarelli (Delaware, Ohio) and
Mason Hess (Mechanicsburg, Ohio) singles and
Sam Battles (Norwalk, Ohio) walk. A double play with
Jordan Daniels (Blacklick, Ohio) at the plate was the final run in the game.
Jelenic had two of the six hits for the Panthers.
Derek Bolander (Oregon, Ohio) allowed three runs in five innings with four strikeouts.
Steven Chapman (Dayton, Ohio) and
Chris Bartholomew (Centerville, Ohio) notched scoreless outings.
Ohio Dominican will return home to Panther Valley with four games against the Tiffin Dragons this weekend.
